About the Author
"Terry and Gerry Audesirk" grew up in New Jersey, where they met as undergraduates. After marrying in 1970, they moved to California, where Terry earned her doctorate in marine ecology at the University of Southern California and Gerry earned his doctorate in neurobiology at the California Institute of Technology. As postdoctoral students at the University of Washington's marine laboratories, they worked together on the neural bases of behavior, using a marine mollusk as a model system. Terry and Gerry are now professors of biology at the University of Colorado at Denver, where they have taught introductory biology and neurobiology since 1982. In their research lab, funded by the National Institutes of Health, they investigate the mechanisms by which neurons are harmed by low levels of environmental pollutants. Terry and Gerry share a deep appreciation of nature and of the outdoors. They enjoy hiking in the Rockies, running near their home in the foothills west of Denver, and attempting to garden at 7000 feet in the presence of hungry deer and elk. They are long-time members of many conservation organizations. Their daughter, Heather, has added another focus to their lives. "Bruce E. Byers," a midwesterner transplanted to the hills of western Massachusetts, is a professor in the biology department at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He's been a member of the faculty at UMass (where he also completed his doctoral degree) since 1993. Bruce teaches introductory biology courses for both nonmajors and majors; he also teaches courses in ornithology and animal behavior. A lifelong fascination with birds ultimately led Bruce to scientific exploration of avian biology. His currentresearch focuses on the behavioral ecology of birds, especially on the function and evolution of the vocal signals that birds use to communicate. The pursuit of vocalizations often takes Bruce outdoors, where he can be found before dawn, tape recorder in hand, awaiting the first songs of a new day.

Great Textbook and Future Resource

I bought this textbook for an Intro to Child Development online and I have found it highly useful. Since I'm in an online course the majority of the instruction comes from this book, and I find it to be thorough. I am planning on becoming a teacher, so I am going to keep this book to help me understand what stages of development my students are in, as well as to study for the Praxis.

This book was cheaper than the actual paperback and came with the code to use my development lab along with it. The development lab really makes a difference in getting the important information out of the book. It also offers movies to help see the points.

Let's see Property Brothers try to remodel THIS one!

Ian Webster, a local artist, has just purchased a new home for him, his wife Holly, and their young son Jacob. It seems perfect, with enough room, a good location, and, surprisingly enough, a cheap selling price. After they move in, however, Ian realizes that the house is more than he expected. He starts to notice strange things in the house, like his reflection moving when he doesn't, and unseen voices speaking to his son. The truth is, the house has a dark secret, and one which will endanger not only those Ian knows, but even his own life.

The plot of "Bad House" is similar to Stephen King's book "The Shining" in that a building has an affect on an otherwise normal father, transforming him from the outside in. Ian's personality and character progressively declines as the book continues: he starts hating his family, he starts lusting after other women, and he starts to become more and more prone to violence. Sam West does an excellent job with the pacing in this regard: you can actually see how Ian gets worse and worse; at first hating what he's becoming, but then growing to love and embrace it. The backstory of the house itself is also explained well - I won't give it away, but by the end, everything comes together in a great payoff.

Though Sam West is sort of known as a gore and shock author, and there are some queasy moments in this book, it actually relies on psychological rather than violent horror. On this point as well, Sam West does an excellent job. There were plenty of moments that come across as freaky, and the book plays with your head as much as Ian's. By the final chapter, you'll be questioning ANYTHING going on, and wondering if ANYTHING is as it seems.

I sort of purchased this on a whim, but I didn't regret it. Though I didn't expect to read this all in one night, I did so anyway, simply because of how entranced I became by the story and events. I highly suggest this!

Bad House, reminds me of Stephen King's The Shining ...

Sam West's latest release, Bad House, reminds me of Stephen King's The Shining (without all the unnecessary 'padding') with aspects of The Amityville Horror thrown in.

Far from the usual splatterpunk, extreme horror we have come to expect from West, this is his attempt at a supernatural, haunted house tale. We still have all the shocks and gore in copious amounts but there is a definite build up of tension which culminates in a fantastic ending. Very intense reading and perhaps leave the light on for this one. ;)

Grueling, Demented, and Horrific are a few of the words I would use to describe this story…I loved it!
Have you ever wondered what makes a house bad? Is it the people who live there? Is it the ground it was built on? Or maybe evil decided that particular house was the one that it would life in, no one really knows. But when a house goes bad you may want to follow your gut instinct. You know, the instinct that tells you to stay the hell away from it. Ian Webster ignored this instinct, his family, Holly and Jacob, along with himself will pay the price for that subtle overlook. He keeps his eyes closed too long, keeps telling himself it’s not real, letting the house own his very soul—nothing good can come from that… Right?
Monstrous imagination and wonderful writing brings this vilely wicked and disturbing story to life. I’ll bet you trust your instincts after you read this one.

A Good Option for Intro Philosophy Classes

Introduction to Philosophy is a comprehensive, lengthy anthology of basic readings in classic and contemporary philosophy. If you buy this product, you'll get selected writings from Descartes, Leibniz, Perry, Plato, Hume, Pascal, Turing, Chisholm, Frankfurt, Mackie, Camus, plus more.

One feature I particularly enjoyed was the "On the Study of Philosophy" section at the beginning of the text. That section basically takes a step back and answers the questions, "Why even bother studying this stuff?" and "What the heck is philosophy?" before diving into complex and mind-bending material.

The contents of the anthology include famous essays on existentialism, free will, consciousness, puzzles and paradoxes, the mind-body problem, and contrasts between good and evil. For the most part it's excellent; however, one might plead that the majority of its contents are simply too hard, and therefore inappropriate, to assign in an introductory survey course consisting mainly of undergraduate freshmen. Highlights include Russell's “The Argument from Anthology for Other Minds”, in which he points out the observations people make from their own experiences in evaluating cause and effect. Yet, he recognizes the fallacy of extending our own validation of experiences beyond ourselves to other people. Also, John Searle provides a very unique interpretation of artificial intelligence (AI) in his classic paper “Minds, Brains and Programs”. He explains the difference between strong AI and weak AI. In weak AI, the computer is merely a tool. In strong AI, the computer has cognitive states such that the programs themselves are in fact explanations.

All of the essays in this collection either raise or point to questions which have been on the minds of people through the ages. New to this edition are 11 new readings -- eight by contemporary women philosophers (yay!) -- covering a wide range of topics including the problem of evil (by Louise Antony, Marilyn McCord Adams, Eleonore Stump, and Stewart Sutherland), moral responsibility (by Gary Watson and Susan Wolf), justice and equality (by Annette Baier), abortion (by Rosalind Hursthouse and Judith Jarvis Thomson), race (by Linda Martín Alcoff), and death (by Dan Moller); an updated and expanded Test Bank, now available on the new online Ancillary Resource Center (ARC), featuring several essay questions, 10 new multiple-choice, and 5 new true/false questions per reading; and expanded student self-quizzes, available on the Companion Website, that include 5 new multiple-choice and 3 new true/false questions per reading.

This third edition of Legal and Ethical Issues in Nursing (previously titled Legal Issues in Nursing) reflects the continuing influence that law, legal issues, and the field of ethics have on the professional practice of nursing. Professional accountability and responsibility are ever increasing, particularly as nurses become more autonomous with the shift from acute care settings to community and ambulatory settings Professional accountability and responsibility are ever increasing, particularly as nurses become more autonomous with the shift from acute care settings to community and ambulatory settings. Professional accountability and responsibility are also enhanced as advanced practice nurses gain more independence through state nurse practice acts and through the entire restructuring of the health care delivery system in the United States.

Consumers continue to become more knowledgeable about their rights within the health care delivery system. Readers familiar with the first and second editions will recognize that much of the content in this text is new, reflecting various changes in the practice of professional nursing. The third edition also combines the field of ethics with legal issues, as these two aspects of the professional nurses' practice cannot truly be separated.

This book is, once again, intended for practicing nurses and for nursing students As with the previous editions, the primary function of this text is to familiarize both nursing students and professional nurses with current legal concepts, allowing the reader to apply legal concepts within an ethical framework, and hopefully providing for improved patient care through the knowledge and understanding of the various means in which these issues affect clinical practice. Additionally, this text is intended to:

  • Educate the beginning nurse, whether in the academic or practice setting, about legal issues, the functions of laws, and ethical application of legal principles.
  • Serve as a resource for practicing nurses, regardless of the clinical practice area.
  • Assist nurses in providing the most competent nursing care possible.
  • An important caveat is that this book is not meant to take the place of professional advice from practicing attorneys, and nurses are cautioned to seek legal counsel before proceeding with any legal matters. The book is meant to augment the role of legal counsel and assist nurses in understanding the legal process and liability issues as they relate to the ethical practice of nursing.

    This edition of Legal and Ethical Issues in Nursing differs in several ways, while preserving the unique features of the former editions. The first three chapters acquaint the reader with basic legal knowledge, including sources and types of laws, the role of the court system in legal matters, and the role of case law in determining standards of nursing care. Completely revised, this first part emphasizes the vast impact that law has on the professional practice of nursing, the important role of nurse expert witnesses in defining professional standards of care, and major legal doctrines and rules that underlie nursing practice.

    The second part of the book contains a single chapter on ethics in health care. This part was moved from the last part of the book to more fully integrate ethical principles into the entire text. This chapter has been revised to emphasize ethical principles and usable ethical model for decision making in clinical areas, rather than evaluating various types of ethical issues that could arise in any clinical setting. This revision allows nurses to make realistic individual decisions in everyday clinical settings, while challenging the reader to become more familiar with ethical decision making models.

    The third part of the book reexplores many of the more basic liability concepts common to al clinical practice areas. Chapters in this part of the book are rewritten, and include expanded sections on patient self-determination, the role of confidentiality and electronic applications in documentation, abuse issues, and the rights of patients I research.

    The final part of the book, comprising the bulk of the text, reflects nursing practice in a variety of clinical settings. New chapters in this part emphasize the vital role of ambulatory care nurses and the role managed care is playing into health care delivery system. Content has been rearranged so that issues pertinent to a specific area of practice flow within a single chapter. Content that has been added includes multistate licensure issues, telenursing, alternative therapies, and an entire section on long-term care nursing. Nursing issues are discussed from the perspective of staff nurses in hospital an clinic settings, nurse managers in both inpatient and outpatient settings, community health nurses' roles, and nurses in academic settings.

    Some readers may find the content of specific chapters could better have been placed in different chapters in this part. While writing the text, I attempted to find the most natural placement for the various content categories, and some of the material could have been placed in a variety of chapters. For example, telenursing could have been added to the chapter on nursing practice acts and licensure rather than being placed in the chapter on ambulatory care nursing.

    Many of the features of the earlier editions have been enhanced. Each chapter opens with a preview of the content to be covered and a listing of the key concepts to be explored. Guidelines are placed throughout the chapters for ease of usage, and many chapters have multiple guidelines. Perhaps the more useful aspect that current case law has been greatly enhanced, allowing nurses to better understand case examples of application of legal issues to professional nursing practice. Each chapter has several exercises that allow the reader to apply chapter content to actual clinical settings and assist readers in exploring their own state laws. Chapters conclude with a section entitled "After Completing This Chapter, You Should Be Able To: tat reinforces the main concepts and goals of the chapter and an "Apply Your Legal Knowledge" section that reflects critical thinking questions related to the specific chapter content.

    Most exciting are the new features of the book, in particular the incorporation of ethical applications in the final 16 chapters of the book. I have been asked by many readers to develop a text that incorporates both legal and ethical issues. Readers are encouraged to address pertinent ethical principles as they complete each chapter. Sections on patient education are incorporated into many of the chapters as nurses continue to assume more of the education and discharge planning aspects of patients' care. With the exception of Chapters 1 and 10, there is also a "You be the Judge" section in all chapters, allowing the reader to truly incorporate the legal issues addressed in the individual chapter. The two chapters where this new feature is not utilized are the chapters that deal with either complicated contract law (Professional Liability Insurance) or specific procedural law (Legal Concepts.)

    I am pleased to see this new edition of Legal and Ethical issues in Nursing a reality. I have truly learned a tremendous amount about the many aspects of nursing in its writing, and trust that you will learn as much in reading and using this text.

    Good book missing pages needed for assignment

    This is being used as a textbook for a graduate class. It is written on an interesting manner with lots of case studies.

    Now that I am at the end of the course, I see the last 2 chapters are missing. Others complained chapter 3 was missing, which I have, but chapters 21 & 22 are missing. I bought 2 versions, the 2014 and the 2010 both have the same missing chapters. i need these chapters to complete my assignment.

    if you have to buy this book, check it out as soon as you get it.

    The book is written well, very organized and easy too follow. It does not overwhelm with information, which I appreciated. I also really enjoyed the scenarios provided in each chapter, the scenarios would apply to the content very well and made it all come together well!

    Although the topic of law does not really interest me, reading this book is quite easy.
    The chapters are short too so that makes me more motivated to read.
    I bought this edition although my professor preferred the 6th. So far, I have not had an trouble because I bought the older edition. The page numbers are different but I just took a picture of the table of contents for the newest one and compared it with this one.
