I ordered this to get a better understanding of my course in P-chem. the solutions manual allowed me to prepare better for tests by solving the problems in the book but also being able to check my answers. Has the work process shown in the solutions, not just the answer which is very helpful as well. Highly recommend this is you are using the textbook by Silbey.

How to Beat the IRS

Keeping up with all the IRS rules and regulations can be a real hassle. The tax code keeps getting more and more complex every year, in spite of countless promises by politicians to "simplify" the system.

This book does give some useful tips on how to avoid taxes. It points out specific ways that you can legally reduce your tax burden, along with key mistakes to avoid, unless you like the idea of being audited.

This book is written in an outline format, with boldface and bulleted text throughout. This is helpful, for finding specific information. You can quickly turn to a chapter that interests you, and then narrow down your reading by looking for the sub- topic that interests you.

Thw way this book portrays the the American tax system might not sit too well with some people. The author talks about the IRS, not necessarily as a great, friendly institution, but not as something to take caution with, either. He paints a picture of the IRS as being a firm, but reasonable institution and points out that we should not fear the IRS at all. We all can think of many, many occasions where this has not been the case. The IRS has abused its authority in many instances, and many feel that some of its unethical actions are directly the result of political manipulation against enemies, like in the case of auditing of high- profile individuals. But this book avoids talking negative, making the IRS seem like an institution that is reasonable and accommodating.

This book shows the reader many ways to avoid taxes, and much of the advice is sound, but I found this book to be a yawner overall. It's one of those books that could be viewed as a reference book, or a reading book. However, if you try to read the book from cover to cover (it's more than 450 pages in length), don't be surprised if your eyelids seem to become very heavy after every few pages of reading. This isn't exciting material, and it can induce drowsiness quickly.

This book has been updated and revised many times to keep it current with the ever- changing tax laws. It's the type of book that becomes outdated very quickly, and needs constant revisions to keep up with the times. My edition is already a couple years old, and I can already see where the technology chapter is way behind.

This is an ok book to have around, as a reference guide to reducing taxes and complying with IRS rules. If you don't want to pay a tax professional and you enjoy the challenge of working on your own taxes, then this book could prove to be very beneficial. For everyone else, it will likely just sit on a shelf and collect dust. Buy it only if you feel that you really need it.

Educational and very interesting fun to read book believe it or not. Everyone should read this, it's not any kind of illegal advice if you're thinking that. La motivacion necesaria para comenzar

Este libro es uno muy bueno para animarte a empezar a invertir. Sin embargo, ten en cuenta que aqui no se revela ningun secreto oculto, mas bien, mediante experiencias personales y algunas citas de quienes alguna vez dijeron algo motivador y emprendedor para tener exito. Esto debe ser visto como una introduccion: que hacer y que no hacer antes de empezar a invertir en la bolsa de valores. Es altamente recomendado si lo que necesitas es un empuje para tener en consideracion la inversion como medio principal de ganancias, como bono, recibes buenos consejos para ejecutar al momento de ahorrar dinero, lo cual es util seas un inversor o no.

Solid update on the state of DSL (with photos too:-))

These guys wrote the book on DSL by creating the products, standards, processes, and applications for broadband in the copper loop. As active participants in the DSL Forum and other standards bodies, Starr, Sorbara, Cioffi, and Silverman have been there, done that. They know their stuff, and it shows in this detailed work on the state of the art of DSL in 2003. While not being shameful to get down into the nitty gritty of "Iterative Water-Filling" or "Duplex clear-down sequences", there is good coverage of the business side of DSL and simple questions like "What is Voice over DSL?" For marketers like me, there are great pictures and diagrams throughout the book about all of the stuff they are talking about! Overall, there's something in here for everyone, just don't feel bad if there's a section or twenty that you don't understand -- these guys are the geniuses who thought it all up!

This book describes the state of the art by the folks defining it. Cioffi of Stanford developed much of the original technology, Sorbara and Starr have led the industry's key technical committee, and Silverman's been a leader in the DSL Forum. A good book by pros for pros, that goes far deeper than anything else published. 01/05/02

An excellent overview of all areas of DSL engineering and deployment. The last section with it's photo tour of the telephone "plant" is unique and especially informative.
Highly recommended for anyone needing a deep technical knowledge of the current state of DSL

Fabulous Author--its really 3.5 stars

First, anything by this author is great. My concern with him is he is divorced from a happy ending so I feel emotionally battered after reading his books. Its an experience and there has been growth but its isnt a feel good experience.

This was the last book of a trilogy. The first two books were devastastingly good. This was not as good as the first two. The beginning of this book expounds on the conclusion of the last book beautifully. Book 3 goes into detail on what happened to the characters at the end of book 2.

It wrapped up the the ending of the 2nd book of the trilogy which was extremely thrilling. After the beginning of book 3, the thrilling parts ended. Its not bad, just not as gripping or the pacing of the other novels. Still this is a great author, but of the trilogy, this is the weakest of the 3 books.

Definitely read the book just to find out what on the full extent of what happened after book 2.

Reading war, reading human.

I would never voluntarily read a book about war. And I freely admit my beliefs that violence and war are only the senseless tools of the senseless has been formed far too glibly, and far too distant from their reality. Through the eyes, the heart, the lives of all the characters in this novel and the whole trilogy my beliefs have been fortified and tears have been shed.
The hardcore realness of this narrative that takes place in World War One is so powerful that this reader felt the force of war; brought to that place by such compelling characters that a human connection was unavoidable. I do not think that I have ever had so much admiration for any such as these: with all their conflicts, strengths, weaknesses, heart, and amazing journeys.
Read the trilogy, you will never regret it.

"Had" to buy

This is the last book in a trilogy by Bryce Courtenay. I was introduced to the author by a friend who gave me the audio book for the second of the series "Tomo and Hawk". I was so taken by the story I searched for other books by Mr. Courtenay and ordered the frist in the series "The Patato Factory" and needed to find out "what happened" to the family. Great book, great story and so much historical accuracy that as a history lesson of the later 19th early 20th century you learn so much. Highly recommend the entire serires, although each book can "stand alone".

Cutting edge, but needs work

This text book is extraordinarily detailed, and provides not only the concepts, but the theory and nuance for beginning in remote sensing. While studying this book, in detail, I have run into the following complaints, though:

1) The glossary and index are so incomplete, they're desolate. Important and conceptual terms that are used are not in either - it makes using the book quite difficult.

2) There is WAY too much minutia - the text is very informative, but I've found that the explanations of most things are excessively verbose.

3) Remote sensing is a very visual field.... and this book doesn't utilize diagrams and images nearly as much as it could/should. I realize that generating diagrams is time-consuming, but it would help this book immensely.

4) Chapter summaries and concept-based questions at the end of the chapters would probably help students a lot, too (perhaps even teachers).

5) There's not nearly enough talk about which EM bands see what, and what they help with. That's the entire basis of remote sensing, and it isn't explored in the detail that it could be.

So, while I recommend this text, because it is one-of-a-kind, I do so with the warning that it is obviously not a fine-tuned text yet.
