An Amazon Best Book of 2016 Pick in Business & LeadershipWall Street Journal Business BestsellerA Business Book of the Week at 800-CEO-READ
One of the most valuable skills in our economy is becoming increasingly rare. If you master this skill, you'll achieve extraordinary results.
Deep work is the ability to focus without distraction on a cognitively demanding task. It's a skill that allows you to quickly master complicated information and produce better results in less time. Deep work will make you better at what you do and provide the sense of true fulfillment that comes from craftsmanship. In short, deep work is like a super power in our increasingly competitive twenty-first century economy. And yet, most people have lost the ability to go deep-spending their days instead in a frantic blur of e-mail and social media, not even realizing there's a better way.
In DEEP WORK, author and professor Cal Newport flips the narrative on impact in a connected age. Instead of arguing distraction is bad, he instead celebrates the power of its opposite. Dividing this book into two parts, he first makes the case that in almost any profession, cultivating a deep work ethic will produce massive benefits. He then presents a rigorous training regimen, presented as a series of four "rules," for transforming your mind and habits to support this skill.
A mix of cultural criticism and actionable advice, DEEP WORK takes the reader on a journey through memorable stories-from Carl Jung building a stone tower in the woods to focus his mind, to a social media pioneer buying a round-trip business class ticket to Tokyo to write a book free from distraction in the air-and no-nonsense advice, such as the claim that most serious professionals should quit social media and that you should practice being bored. DEEP WORK is an indispensable guide to anyone seeking focused success in a distracted world.

Review
Praise for So Good They Can't Ignore You:"Stop worrying about what you feel like doing (and what the world owes you) and instead, start creating something meaningful and then give it to the world. Cal really delivers with this one." ―Seth Godin, author, Linchpin

"Entrepreneurial professionals must develop a competitive advantage by building valuable skills. This book offers advice based on research and reality--not meaningless platitudes-- on how to invest in yourself in order to stand out from the crowd. An important guide to starting up a remarkable career."―Reid Hoffman, co-founder & chairman of LinkedIn and co-author of the bestselling The Start-Up of You: Adapt to the Future, Invest in Yourself, and Transform Your Career

"Do what you love and the money will follow' sounds like great advice -- until it's time to get a job and disillusionment quickly sets in. Cal Newport ably demonstrates how the quest for 'passion' can corrode job satisfaction. If all he accomplished with this book was to turn conventional wisdom on its head, that would be interesting enough. But he goes further -- offering advice and examples that will help you bypass the disillusionment and get right to work building skills that matter."―Daniel H. Pink, bestselling author of Drive and A Whole New Mind

"This book changed my mind. It has moved me from 'find your passion, so that you can be useful' to 'be useful so that you can find your passion.' That is a big flip, but it's more honest, and that is why I am giving each of my three young adult children a copy of this unorthodox guide."―Kevin Kelly, Senior Maverick, WIRED magazine

"Written in an optimistic and accessible tone, with clear logic and no-nonsense advice, this work is useful reading for anyone new to the job market and striving to find a path or for those who have been struggling to find meaning in their current careers."―Publishers Weekly

The Top 15 Take-Aways from Deep Work
By Amazon Customer
If you want to separate yourself from the crowd by accomplishing important things or if you want your team/organization to accomplish important things, Deep Work has what it takes to go to the next level. A must read for our email/social media burdened world. Here are my “top 15” takeaways from deep work. If you multi task, jump to number 15. :-)
.
1. Spend enough time in a state of frenetic shallowness and you permanently reduce your capacity to perform deep work.
.
2. I build my days around a core of carefully chosen deep work, with the shallow activities I absolutely cannot avoid batched into smaller bursts at the peripheries of my schedule.
.
3. Two Core Abilities for Thriving in the New Economy 1. The ability to quickly master hard things. 2. The ability to produce at an elite level, in terms of both quality and speed.
.
4. High-Quality Work Produced = (Time Spent) x (Intensity of Focus)
.
5. Busyness as Proxy for Productivity: In the absence of clear indicators of what it means to be productive and valuable in their jobs, many knowledge workers turn back toward an industrial indicator of productivity: doing lots of stuff in a visible manner.
.
6. Depth-destroying behaviors such as immediate e-mail responses and an active social media presence are lauded, while avoidance of these trends generates suspicion.
.
7. “Who you are, what you think, feel, and do, what you love— is the sum of what you focus on.”
.
8. You don’t need a rarified job; you need instead a rarified approach to your work.
.
9. You have a finite amount of willpower that becomes depleted as you use it. …The key to developing a deep work habit is to move beyond good intentions and add routines and rituals to your working life designed to minimize the amount of your limited willpower necessary to transition into and maintain a state of unbroken concentration.
.
10. … the minimum unit of time for deep work in this philosophy tends to be at least one full day. To put aside a few hours in the morning, for example, is too short to count as a deep work stretch for an adherent of this approach.
.
11. Idleness is not just a vacation, an indulgence or a vice; it is as indispensable to the brain as vitamin D is to the body, and deprived of it we suffer a mental affliction as disfiguring as rickets… it is, paradoxically, necessary to getting any work done.
.
12. At the end of the workday, shut down your consideration of work issues until the next morning— no after-dinner e-mail check, no mental replays of conversations, and no scheming about how you’ll handle an upcoming challenge; shut down work thinking completely. If you need more time, then extend your workday, …trying to squeeze a little more work out of your evenings might reduce your effectiveness the next day enough that you end up getting less done than if you had instead respected a shutdown.
.
13. for a novice, somewhere around an hour a day of intense concentration seems to be a limit, while for experts this number can expand to as many as four hours— but rarely more.
.
14. The ability to concentrate intensely is a skill that must be trained.
.
15. So we have scales that allow us to divide up people into people who multitask all the time and people who rarely do, and the differences are remarkable. People who multitask all the time can’t filter out irrelevancy. They can’t manage a working memory. They’re chronically distracted. They initiate much larger parts of their brain that are irrelevant to the task at hand… they’re pretty much mental wrecks.

Find the good ideas; ignore the philosophizing
By AB
I have generally been a fan of Cal's work, but had a mixed view on this book. TL DR: It has some good actionable steps, but with a lot of fluff about being more counter-culture and revolutionary than it is or needs to have.

The Good
1. Cal highlights actionable ways to 1) increase concentration and focus and 2) produce more work output. He specifically delineates between "shallow" low priority work and "deep" high-priority, high-payoff work and ways to identify which types of work fall into which category.
2. Cal anticipates more of the (valid) objections and nuances to his thesis than I've seen him do previously. I thought his discussions on professions like CEOs that might not be deep-work appropriate, different ways to think about what social media improves your life, and going off-schedule to pursue an insight made the book much more well-rounded and connected to life.

The Not-so-good
1. The book is written as if it's presenting "a new, flashy, grand theory of everything". It's not that. The idea of working in a deep, focused manner isn't a new one or one that would shock people (as the book's extensive citations show). But the book puts up a very intense battle against an army of straw men. I don't think you'd find anyone who disagrees with the general notion of working intensely on your priorities; it's making your life conducive to it (and getting done what you aim to get done when you sit down) that's the hard part. So the book feels more to me like ideas you'd share with friends about how to be more productive than a revolutionary new idea, but you have to wade through *pages* of why this is *life-changing* and *flashy* to get to the more useful actionable steps.
2. I think that deep work is a very large umbrella term that could be broken down. For example, the way in which brainstorming or writing an academic paper stretches your brain is very different from the way in which editing a paper (p. 228) stretches your brain. Cal identifies all of these as deep work, but more thought on how you attack very different types of deep work would be helpful. For example, the open-ended process of generating an idea and getting it on to paper requires a different process than the mind-numbing tedium of final paper edits. I would have liked more thinking through the "initial attack" and then the "follow-through".

A persuasive argument + a detailed action plan for how to be a high performing knowledge worker using deep work
By Timothy Kenny
Deep Work is the execution/tactical companion to Newport's last book, So Good They Can't Ignore You and it doesn't disappoint.

These books should be taken together as a whole because they give you the WHAT, the WHY and the HOW for being an elite knowledge worker.

So Good they Can't Ignore you shows you why building valuable and rare skills, which Newport calls "career capital" is the number one most important thing for finding a job you love (not "finding your passion"). Building that capital allows you to find a job where you can have creative control over your work and more control over your time, which allows you to do "deep work," aka deliberate practice (and the 10,000 hour rule for expertise, Gladwell, Ericsson and others). There are also 2 other factors, choosing a domain or mission or project where you will have a postive impact on the world, and choosing to work with people who you like being around, which aren't covered much but Newport assumes you should be able to figure out on your own.

Summary of what you need to be So Good They Can't Ignore You

1. Rare and valuable skills (aka career capital)
2. Creative control over projects
3. Control over your time (which allows you to do deep work, virtuous cycle)
4. Work that has a positive impact on the world
5. Working with people you enjoy being with

Here's the formula:

-Use deep work to learn fast and build up rare and valuable skills.
-Then apply these rare and valuable skills to the right projects so that you can build up career capital.
-Then cash in the career capital to get more creative and time control over your job.
-All the while, try to pick jobs and projects that have a positive impact and allow you to work with good people.
-However, these are usually also things that you need to trade in your career capital (rare skills and experience using them) in order to maximize.
-Don't try to save the world or have a big impact until you have the career capital to match. Otherwise you will probably fail. You have to earn all these perks via building career capital by using deep work.

So Good They Can't Ignore You doesn't spend much time explaining how to actually implement deep work (deliberate practice) into you life. It tells you to focus deeply, stretch yourself cognitively and get constant high quality feedback on your work/output.

That's where Deep Work comes in. Deep Work shows you exactly WHY deep work is so important (as opposed to Shallow Work), especially for modern knowledge workers, and why the way most people work, with constant interruptions from social media, email and their phones, is holding most knowledge workers back from being successful and competitive in today's job market.

The first part of the book argues for why Deep Work is important. If you have already bought into the idea, you can skim this part, but I found the examples and people he featured to be very interesting so it's worth a read. Just don't expect a lot of tactics until part 2.

Chapter 1 explains why deep work is VALUABLE. Our economy is changing, and the days of doing the same thing over and over for 40 years until you retire are over. Newport lays out an interesting theory for 3 types of workers, Superstars, Owners and High Skill Workers and makes a convincing and important argument for the importance in the future of being able to work at higher levels of abstraction and work with intelligent machines.

In this chapter he also makes a case for the two critical skills for knowledge workers:
1. Learning Quickly
2. Producing at an Elite Level

This conclusion informs the rest of the book. If you want to be good at these two skills, the most important thing to be good at is deep work.

Chapter 2 focuses on why deep work is RARE. He shows how distractions are becoming more and more common for knowledge workers, and that attention is becoming more and more fractures. Newport makes a good case for how complex knowledge work is often hard to measure, so managers measure busyness instead of output that relates to bottom line results (KPIs). Busyness as a vanity metric. People end up optimizing for looking busy instead of getting real work done, and everybody plays along with this charade.

Chapter 3 goes into why deep work is MEANINGFUL. Meaning is a key part of Newport's argument because the whole book links back to the Passion vs. Rare Skills debate…which is a better strategy for finding a job you love? If the job isn't meaningful, then deep work doesn't fully answer the question of how to best find a job you love. Newport give 3 theories on why deep work is meaningful, a psychological, neurological and a philosophical reason.

That's it for part 1.

In Part 2, Newport tells you how to implement deep work into your day to day life with 4 rules.

Rule 1 gives you a bunch of strategies and examples of how to integrate deep work into your schedule. He offers different strategies depending on what kind of work you do. The Grand Gestures part of this chapter is really good, you learn about Bill Gates Think Week and same famous authors who go to secluded islands or build cabins to get a lot of deep work done when necessary. There is also a section here on execution using the 4 Disciplines from Clayton Christensen's work. The point on lead vs. lag measures is really good.

Rule 2 covers the idea of embracing boredom. Newport gives a number of strategies for doing two important things: improving your ability to focus and eliminating your desire for distraction. At first these seem like the same thing but Newport explains why they are actually two different skills. For example, someone who is constantly switching between social media and infotainment sites can block off time for deep work but they won't be able to focus if they can't control their desire to always have instant gratification and constant stimulus. The point about making deep work your default, and scheduling shallow work in between is also a game changer.

Rule 3 is about social media sites and infotainment sites. This rule isn't as strategic as the other ones, it's mostly about making a side argument that these networking sites aren't as important is you think they are. He gives some good strategies for measuring what sites and services you should include in your day to day life based on the total collection of all the positive and negative effects. This sort of critical thinking and measurement usually doesn't get applied to these kind of sites.

Rule 4 is about draining the shallows, meaning going through the process of eliminating as much as possible shallow work from your daily schedule. This is more tactical chapter, (This and Rule 1 are the most useful of the 4) you learn how to plan out your day, how to stop from bringing your work home with you with an end of day ritual and how to manage your email so that you cut down on the amount of time you spend in your inbox each day. There is also a strategy for how to talk to your boss about deep work so you can get permission to re-arrange your schedule to be more productive.

Overall Thoughts:

This book, and Newport's previous book So Good They Can't Ignore You, are some of the most important books you will read on planning your career.

Most people spend little to no time on these decisions, or just go with the flow or with how other people approach things, even though this planning process will affect the next 4 to 5 decades of their life.

Most people's thinking is still stuck in the industrial economy way of thinking…it makes sense thought, our education system is also stuck in this way of thinking. Deep work gives you a solid, actionable plan and doesn't leave anything out that I can think of.

Hans Christian Andersen: The Life Of A Storyteller, by Jackie Wullschlager

The first English language biographer to have returned to the original Danish sources, Wullshlager creates a fascinating picture of Andersen as a deeply troubled man, as far from Danny Kaye's all-singing version as it is possible to imagine. Desperately sensitive, sexually confused and socially awkward, Andersen found grace and acceptance through the creation of a distinct and beguiling literary world, becoming, as was once said of Tolkien, 'the creative equivalent of a people'. Wullschlager's achievement is to demonstrate the unity of his troubled life and and the soaring achievement of his work. He appears in this biography more various and more flawed, but also more convincing and more impressive, than ever before.

Review
"In my view it is the best book ever written about Hans Christian Andersen. If someone had asked me a couple of months ago which biography of Andersen was the best I would immodestly have said my own work, but today I would answer that the best book is the one written by Jackie Wullschlager. Not only is is a fuller and more comprehensive biography, but it is the first book ever to place Andersen in a contemporary European tradition and to measure him with a European yardstick." —Elias Bredsdorff, Emeritus Professor of Scandinavian Languages at Cambridge

"[T]his spring, Knopf will publish a biography by Jackie Wullschlager, a writer for the London Financial Times, which may add to the few reliable studies available in English, the most notable of which is Elias Bredsdorff's . . ." —Diana and Jeffrey Frank, The New Yorker

"Finely documented and insightful . . . Jackie Wullschlager's account . . . is a delight . . . her work gives off a classic sparkle. It will bring joy . . . "
-George Steiner, Observer

"Splendid . . . authoritative . . . gracefully written [and] meticulously referenced . . . will encourage many readers to revisit an author who undoubtedly deserves serious critical attention."
-Christina Hardyment, Financial Times

"Intensively researched and elegantly written."
-Humphrey Carpenter, Sunday Times

"Deals brilliantly with the whole man."
-Melanie McDonagh, Daily Telegraph

"Told with thoroughness and sympathy . . . [a life] as peculiar, fascinating and painful as any of his celebrated fairy tales."
-Rosemary Ashton, Sunday Telegraph

"An extraordinarily accomplished biography, both intellectually rigorous and emotionally wise . . . fascinating . . . Wullschlager wears her learning lightly but still we are left feeling we are in the hands of an expert guide."
-Kathryn Hughes, Literary Review

"He seemed ...to live in a world peculiarly his own, all his ideas, thoughts and actions differing from those around him"
By sally tarbox
The reader comes away from this work with a vivid picture of the great Danish author. From his lowly birth, son of an illiterate washerwoman, his early love of music and theatre, his shyness yet profound self-belief which prompted him to leave home to make his fortune in Copenhagen aged only 14, Wullschlager conducts us through his life.
Despite his fairy tales and enjoyment of the company of children, Andersen was far from being merely the naive and child-like personality which some attributed to him. Using his diaries and accounts of those who knew him, the author shows his often depressive and difficult character, and his constant craving for approbation - "We are suffering a good deal from Andersen" wrote Charles Dickens when the latter came for a lengthy stay.
Andersen's work (not just fairy tales but novels, plays, travel works, poetry, and latterly tales aimed at a more adult audience) are shaped by events in his life, and in exerpts from his writings Wullschlager points out the parallels between them.
With a number of b/w photos of Andersen and important places and people in his life, this leaves the reader with a feeling that s/he knows and somewhat understands the writer. Most enjoyable and interesting.

The Lonely Hunter: A Biography of Carson McCullers, by Virginia Spencer Carr

The Lonely Hunter is widely accepted as the standard biography of Carson McCullers. Author of such landmarks of modern American fiction as Reflections in a Golden Eye and The Ballad of the Sad Café, Carson McCullers was the enfant terrible of the literary world of the 1940s and 1950s. Gifted but tormented, vulnerable but exploitative, McCullers led a life that had all the elements―and more―of a tragic novel.

From McCullers's birth in Columbus, Georgia, in 1917 to her death in upstate New York in 1967, The Lonely Hunter thoroughly covers every significant event in, and aspect of, the writer's life: her rise as a young literary sensation; her emotional, artistic, and sexual eccentricities and entanglements; her debilitating illnesses; her travels in America and Europe; and the provenance of her works from their earliest drafts through their book, stage, and film versions.

To research her subject, Virginia Spencer Carr visited all of the important places in McCullers's life, read virtually everything written by or about her, and interviewed hundreds of McCullers's relatives, friends, and enemies. The result is an enduring, distinguished portrait of a brilliant, but deeply troubled, writer.

Review

Sensitive, balanced, authoritative . . . A work of prodigious research and unblinking honesty―the kind of biography that leaves the reader replete with the sense of having vicariously experienced a life as it was lived.

(New York Times)

Fascinating . . . From the pages of The Lonely Hunter emerges the essential spirit of a consequential and controversial American writer.

(New York Times Book Review)

Carr's biography is full, sympathetic, and frank. She knows Carson McCullers's life and work inside out.

(Newsweek)

Likely to become the definitive biography of McCullers

(Library Journal)

Admirable . . . Offers the best picture we are likely to get of an almost incomprehensibly neurotic personality.

(New Yorker)

Well-researched, scholarly bio worthy of McCullers.
By terry anzaldi
A biography worthy of one of America's unsung literary heroes. McCullers insight into the human condition and her flawless skill at structure and composition belies her second class stature among the great literary artists of mid-century America. This work brings that genius to the foreground. If you are interested in a thorouhly researched, scholarly portrait of McCullers life and work, this bio is a must read.

The Lonely Hunter: A Biography of Carson McCullers--A Study in Trivial Pursuits
By T. M. Johnson
Out of respect for the work ethic, add an extra half star to this review. Of the many biographies I have read, Virginia Spencer Carr's "The Lonely Hunter" is by far the most torturous. As I slogged through 537 pages chronicling the life and times of this talented but complex personality, I couldn't help but think of the young schoolboy who when his teacher observed he showed an interest in sharks, brought him a book on that subject. Later she asked her student if he had learned much about sharks. The boy replied, "Yes, more than I wanted to know." One certainly can't accuse Ms. Carr of not doing her research (21 pages of source citations) in McCullers' biography. It's as if she needs to account for every hour of her subject's life. Like Carson's omnipresent thermos of hot tea and sherry, we are asked to sip every detail of her life to the very last drop.

I read "The Lonely Hunter" to learn more about a young woman who at the age of twenty-three wrote the wonderful novel "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter." I was intrigued by how Carson, at such a young age, could write that poignant story with a skill and wisdom that comes only with practice and life experience. In this regard Carr delivers. She explains McCullers' fascination with "fringe" people, those human beings who because of physical, mental or social defects walk the darker paths of humankind. Thus the deaf mute John Singer in "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter." Carson's "we of me" concept, a sort of psychic menage a trois, many of which involved McCullers herself during her life, translates to similar relationships between the pages of her books. The young girl Mick Kelly in Carson's novel has her "inner room," where she keeps her dreams, her goals, her love of music, an expression of McCuller's own talent for and devotion to music. Carr relates, too, how her subject's thesis that an antagonism forms in "lover/beloved" realtionships manifests itself in Carson's stories. I was disappointed Carr did not reveal more about McCullers' austere writing style, her masterful use of the simple declarative sentence. And though the biographer cites the many books and authors Carson read, she makes no connection between these and McCullers' craft.

Carson McCullers was a complex human being as Spenser Carr so well reveals, a daughter fussed over and smothered by an adoring mother to the point Carson became a lifelong egocentric, a person to be suffered by her friends (though willingly by most), needy to the point of being parasitic. I found Carson's abandonment of her suicidal husband Reeves (she married him twice) indefensible. But as is often the case with many artists, they are ennobled only by their art.

Like her fellow Georgian and contemporary Flannery O'Connor (they lived only 130 miles apart, even were granted extended stays at the artists' colony Yaddo, but never met--strange...), Carson experienced health issues for much of her adult life (O'Connor died of lupus at the age of 39; McCullers age 50). And thanks to Spenser Carr the reader must endure it too; every trip to the hospital, every illness, every bout with the flu, nearly every runny nose, we are present at her bedside. McCullers' pregnancy and abortion, though, receives a scant paragraph and a half. (Given Carson's liberal attitudes toward sex, whether the father was husband Reeves or one of the many men in her life, the author never says.) Furthermore,an abortion would seem to be a major life event to an adult woman. But only a paragraph and a half??

Other readers might appreciate Carr's thorough research and meticulous attention to detail, but after the first few chapters the book to me became a drone of minutiae: like panning gold, I had to sift a great deal of sand before I came to the precious flecks. As I turned the final page, I found myself thinking much the same as the boy and his sharks--I learned much more about Carson McCullers than I needed--or wanted--to know.

If You like Biographies, If You love Carson McCullers
By Bookish
I read biographies of artists...mostly writers. This is a dense book, full of detail, covering McCullers' entire life. If you prefer memoirs written in the genre "creative non-fiction," then you probably won't be drawn into this book. But if you have read a lot of biographies, as I have, and are used to the non-active and somewhat dry academic narratives that are found in these types of books, and are interested in the life that brought about McCuller's timeless work, you will find this biography to be one of the best. It is respectful, and also fascinating to those of us who consider McCullers to have been a literary and artistic genius.

Fifty recipes from the ancient world are presented in a fresh, new design alongside reproductions of ancient wall paintings, mosaics, vases, and household objects.  Originally published in 1996, The Classical Cookbook was the first book about ancient dining to draw from both Greek and Roman writings. Each chapter describes a different social gathering and the food that might have been served on such an occasion. From a menu inspired by Homer’s Odyssey in 700 B.C., to the offerings at a typical Greek symposium or drinking party in fourth century Athens, to the special treats at a Macedonian wedding feast, the recipes presented here suggest the true variety of food and social life in the ancient Mediterranean.

Enjoy Parthian chicken, fish in coriander sauce, squash Alexandria-style, cabbage the Athenian way, pancakes with honey and sesame seeds, and many more tasty dishes. Each original recipe is followed by a version for today’s cook.

Lovely combination of recipes and historical information
By M. Gacsaly
Excellent book for both its recipes (easy to follow with directions given for both the English and American cook) and its description of Roman life, for both the Roman commoners and the citizens of stature. If you want to have a Roman banquet, or a simple, traditional Roman meal, this is an ideal book. I especially enjoyed the well-written sections on Roman history, which perfectly integrate the recipes with what we know about the people's lives and the ingredients which were available to them. I looked at every Roman cookbook I could find, in both the USA and England, and my three favorites are: Classical Cookbook, by Dalby and Grainger, and, A Taste of Ancient Rome, by Ilaria Giacosa, and Roman Cookery, by Mark Grant. The latter two have more recipes than the first, but Classical Cookbook is a quality book with exquisite pictures, illustrations and explanations.

Excellent
By Cosmas Bisticas
Fifteen years after it's original release this book remains one of the best on the subject. I would like to clarify that, as the authors point out through references to Odysseus, Philoxennus, Macedonia etc. it explains very cleary that the Greeks were those who elevated cookery into an art, through trial and error and endless experimentation. It focuses primarily on techniques and recipes that originated in ancient Greecemuch later to be passed on to ancent Rome. I make this point as a reviwer has incorrectly given the impression that the book focuses primarily on Roman cookery. One might argue that they at that time in history they were one in the same as Romans brought Greek slaves and free Greek cooks to prepare their meals for them ultimately consuming the same dishes. Over time, the simple dishes introduced by the Greeks became more complicated and lavish, an evolution that has continued till today. There are several other books available that cover this period in detail.

Having made the above points, the author has done an excellent job in the first 30 pages of the book to explain the intricacies of the recipes that follow, explaining the ingredients used, where to find them and substitutions that can be made in order to get an approximate idea of what the Ancient Greeks and later the Romans enjoyed at their tables. It is a good read regardless if you plan to execute the recipes or not.

Try the Roman Mushrooms
By Rebecca Menes
An excellent historic cook book. Solid history. Author is careful with the reconstructions, explaining what is known, and what is inferred, for each recipe. And the recipes are good. I especially like the mushrooms with fish sauce and honey. Try it.

Review

Most textbooks that I have read or used use the terms “learning objective”.  While there is nothing wrong with this, I feel that the author of this book personalizes the issue of learning for the reader.

The “Did You Know” opener-- Fun, interesting facts that draw the reader into the chapter.  You are not starting off with somewhat dry, hard to read material that tends to turn readers off.   The writing style —very readable, flows nicely, comprehensive content.   …..much better because of the specific examples used and the strong patho throughout the chapter.   The content, even from the objectives, has a positive, health promotion focus   NCLEX questions — variety, simplicity and clarity in content and format

From the Back Cover
"Nutrition and Diet Therapy for Nurses" will be a staple in your nursing library. Encompassing all aspects of nutrition, from the foundation of nutrition principles to the medical nutrition therapy, it presents a solid, evidence-based approach to nutrition. Now, more than ever, it is crucial that nurses know how to interpret the science of nutrition and its role in health maintenance and disease. This new book helps the reader sift through the evolving field of nutrition, with information coming from the media, marketing promotions, the neighbor's advice, and internet information. The easy-to-understand organization and features that focus on the latest evidence make this book comprehensive, while at the same time fun to read. Among the many useful chapter features, the reader will find:

  • Evidence-Based Practice boxes that analyze the latest research in the field.
  • Nursing Care Plans will correlate key concepts of the chapter with the nursing process.
  • Hot Topics give the reader an overview of trendy nutrition topics and present the latest research
  • Client Education Checklists are quick reviews of the major patient teaching points presented in the chapter and serve as a guide to implementing patient education.
  • NCLEX-RN(R)-style questions for each chapter give readers a chance to review the material.

This book is great. It was changed this semester from the book they had last semester and it is a wya better book. The chapters are easy to read and it applies to the nursing major, rather than a normal nutrition book for anyone.
