Outstanding, tour de force manual!

This is a superbly written book by true authority. Another book offered by amazon on this subject is very superficial and completely pales in comparison. I am advanced user of meetup, read almost everything available on this subject, so I didn't expect many revelations but I figured out that a couple of new ideas wil be worth the price. Boy, was I wrong. I got so much more! This is outstanding, tour de force manual, offering a in-depth perspective and very practical tips. I am so excited about new possibilities of meetup, and I am just in the middle of the first reading. Highly recommeded.

About the Author

Editor-in-Chief Jack Halpern is the CEO of The CJK Dictionary Institute (CJKI) in Japan. The institute is one of the world's prime sources for CJK (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) dictionaries, and specializes in compiling comprehensive CJK and Arabic lexical databases. A lexicographer by profession, Halpern spent sixteen years compiling the New Japanese-English Character Dictionary, also newly revised and republished as The Kodansha Kanji Dictionary.

The best update kanji dictionary you can get!!

I just got my copy of this book today and I'm really happy it was worth the price, I have the previous edition too but I must say this is by far the best (compact) and update kanji dictionary I own by now. It has the official kanji list 2,136 of 2009 reform and much more kanji; the most outstanding feature of this edition is that every kanji is given its readings (ON/kun) using KANA instead of roumaji which was the previous book, every entry has many compounds showing the use and frecuency of that character plus its proper stroke order (except the kanji for names or Jinmeiyou Kanji have no stroke order shown) which help you to memorize them properly...at the end it explain the sounds of Japanese language using the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) for improving your pronunciation if you want to know nowdays kanji this is the DICTIONARY for you!!

Great dictionary in every way

The Kodansha Kanji Learner's Dictionary Revised and Expanded, is all you could hope for and more, much more. With the brilliant and easy SKIP method of kanji lookup, plus 4 other methods, the kanji you want can be found in less than a 1/2 minute, (unless you stop to browse, which is very tempting). The 5 methods of lookup are clearly and simply laid out on the inside of the front and back covers with more descriptive material on the methods in the appendixes. Easy to understand.

Extremely valuable are the Core meanings with the pertinent Kanji in red. If you know a core meaning, you can understand or sense what an unknown compound means. Handy as well are the stroke order diagrams to help you learn to write the characters better and to count strokes correctly. There are also tips for correct counting of strokes in Appendix 2.

I have used the SKIP method with the first edition's electronic version as well as in the App so I was a bit concerned the paper version would slow me down. Not at all! I now prefer the paperback for the beauty of it and for browsing.

Gone is the romaji of the first edition making this a highly more usable dictionary, more professional and more in line with current teaching. There are 3002 kanji, 772 more than the first edition and thousands of compounds which appear to be well chosen. The meanings are precise, well written and also well chosen. The front and back material is very interesting and Jack Halpern and the others who worked on this dictionary should be highly applauded and greatly thanked!

The paper is perfect with some see through but not in anyway disturbing, the text remains quite clear.The type used for the hiragana and katakana is beautifully clear and so easy to read, with no inky muddiness, no lines running together. It is very well designed, the cover is sturdy. The center margin is wide enough for readability when opened. At 1 3/4 inch thick, it is full value for the money.

I don't feel you have to be only a learner to get full value from this dictionary. It is going to be by my side for many years. Thank you Jack Halpern!

Best kanji dictionary for its price.

I'm so happy I had this pre-ordered, even though I had to wait so long. Still, it has everything I need, even the name-kanji. It's really very helpful, especially since the 1,906 kanji in the six grade levels (in other kanji books) are not enough to read the newspapers or TV headlines. Happy to say that this dictionary is the best one I have ever purchased since I started learning Nihongo. I highly-recommend it to everyone learning kanji, it's worth buying!

About the Author
After working as a designer and graphic artist for over 30 years, Jay "Fishy" Fullum retired in 1995 to pursue his passion for writing, tying flies and fly-fishing. He still utilizes his art talent when illustrating his magazine articles or a new book. Fishy also established himself as an accomplished watercolorist shortly after retiring; selling many paintings that combine his art and fly tying talents.
Fishy has been tying flies since the early fifties. During the past twenty years he has designed nearly a hundred and fifty productive, innovative patterns for everything from bluegills to bonefish.Many of these patterns are featured in his CREATIVE TYING column published in FLY TYER MAGAZINE. Other patterns can be found in Fishy's two fly tying books, Fishy's Flies and Fishy's Favorites and A Jar Full of Hoppers, a book of short stories on fly fishing and fly tying.Fishy is featured at fly tying/fly fishing events from Massachusetts to Florida, where he teaches and demonstrates the art of fly tying at the vise.

Introduction

The show was scheduled during the later part of April, a time of year that can be spring like or still in the hands of old man winter. Several of the local fly fishers had been keeping a vigilant eye on the weather forecast during the weekend. If the forecasters were reading their computer models correctly the weather was going to be warm and sunny during the first few days following the show.

I had brought all of my fishing gear in hopes that we would have the opportunity to wet a line. When I found out that the weather was going to cooperate I started asking questions. One of my questions pertained to the flies we might be fishing. After receiving the same answer from several of the local fly fishers, I went out to the car, retrieved my vest and checked a couple of my boxes. I had very few of the recommended patterns.

After putting all of the bizarre materials scattered around my vise back into their proper storage bags I located a package of mayfly tails, a cape, a little dubbing and some wing material. It had been months since I'd tied a genuine Catskill dry fly. I tied a couple of the tiny flies before they started to look like I really knew what I was doing, but before long the flies looked like the dry flies that I tied when I was tying flies for money.

I had nearly a dozen stacked up in a neat little pile next to my vise and was finishing off the head on yet another when I felt a hand on my shoulder. One of the other tiers had been watching me crank out the little dry flies. After gluing the head I removed the fly from the vise and dropped it into his hand. He carefully picked it up and inspected it for several seconds, then smiled. “I'll be dammed, he said, you really can tie flies.”

Some of the unusual stuff I attach to a hook is actually superior to materials commonly used when tying traditional patterns. For example, fibers from old seat belts are similar to several products recommended when tying spent-wings, wings, and posts on dry flies. I don't tie exclusively with the seat belt fibers because a lifetime supply of this material is available for little or nothing. I prefer to use it because it is often the best material for the job. My friend didn't even notice that I was using the seat belt fibers when tying the dry flies piled beside my vise.

After spending many years creating patterns with strange stuff some of these materials have become as important as the hooks and thread. As my tying evolves, the number of marvelous new materials increases. I have given some examples of how many of these materials can be used, and I encourage you to find other ways to make the most of these non-traditional materials when tying some of your favorite flies. It is my wish that you will be able to put many of the unusual materials covered in this publication to good use. I also hope that as you tie with these peculiar materials you will begin to search the home improvement, hobby and craft stores for additional materials that will be incorporated into your creations.

Finally, remember that the choice of materials when tying a specific pattern does not necessarily dictate the quality of a fly or the skill of the tier. I have seen thousands of marvelous patterns tied with some very strange stuff.

Excellent little book, interesting to read, and containing some insights into using materials that are available as household and/or hobby shop items with quite surprising results. Mr. Fullum has a very conversational writing style which makes it easy to follow. Another Great Book from Jay "Fishy" Fullum

The "Fly Tying with Common Household Materials" book is a Homerun in my opinion. Lots of information, tricks of the trade, short cuts and tips on materials and tying. This is my third book from Fishy. I have almost as much fun looking for materials as I do tying and Fishy has saved me lots of time in trial and error.

Great Insights into Women

Helen Jacey has looked at the way women are represented in film and offers so many insights. When you choose to make the lead character in your story a woman there is a reason, even if it is instinctive. The Women in the Story encourages the writer to explore that choice and looks at the power a female lead brings to the story and how to maximize the impact on the screen. I can't think of another book that has recognized that there is an interesting and unique perspective that is introduced when the lead is a Heroine.

I think a lot of writing is taking your instinct for a story from your unconscious to your conscious where you can manipulate it. Jacey presents ideas that inspire understanding of the female heroine which allow the writer to take some risks and explore the Heroine's essential nature.

I really like the movie examples Jacey has chosen. Some I was not aware of but the explanations are so vivid I can understand her point and they sound so good I have them noted for my next trip to the video store! She also talks about movies that didn't work. I found it really helpful to notice why a character felt flat. Not knowing the things Jacey reveals in her book has far too often left female characters unlikeable or unmemorable next to male counterparts that sparkle on the screen.

"The Woman In The Story" gives an in depth approach to what goes on in the minds and hearts of female characters. It is thought-provoking, very well written and informative. I especially love Jacey's exploration of the internal wound, the internal gift, the external wound and the external gift. This book will help every level of writer learn to write from a place of greater consciousness and will, in turn, connect the audience to their stories.

Breaking the Molds for Unforgettable Heroines

In The Woman in the Story, Helen Jacey gives you a rare look into what makes a compelling, unique, and unforgettable heroine in films, the secret formula for building her foundation, and all the questions you need to ask to bring her to life on the page.

Helen reveals the various roles that women choose in life (and sometimes that have been chosen for them, as history has demonstrated with the many cultures of the world). Often is the case, women will choose more than one role through-out their life. These role choices give women more depth, character, and distinction, compared to the typical stereotypes and archetypes, which are culturally created and have been the basis from which so many female characters in films have been conceived and portrayed.

She examines the primal, masculine-oriented, conflict/stakes driven stories along with the harmony, balance, and connection-oriented, union driven stories. Helen incorporates over 190 films and T.V. shows as examples to include characters like Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind, Clarice Starling in Silence of the Lambs, Dian Fossey in Gorillas in the Mist, Andrea and Miranda in The Devil Wears Prada, Carrie Bradshaw in Sex in the City and more.

Real-life heroines, through-out history, have been breaking the molds for women around the world; it's our responsibility to not only tell their stories, but those of the present and future heroines as well. One of the most challenging things a writer must do is to not only observe others and the relationships in their own lives, but they must take a deep look within themselves (all the good, bad, and ugly parts). Every human being has faults, weaknesses, insecurities, an evil twin, made mistakes, buried wounds, and scars, along with good qualities and experiences too. Understanding human nature is the key to being able to write about it accurately and it must start from within.

I highly recommend The Woman in the Story for all writers who want to create more realistic, diverse, and memorable heroines in their stories; and, it's not just about making your female characters unforgettable, but you as a writer as well.
