From the Neolithic Jar to Seventh Generation

You'll probably only purchase this book if you're forced to by your Graphic Design class in university. Otherwise, why would you pay $45 for a paperback? But that's a shame because the quality of this production, from the extensive survey of packaging design history (from a Neolithic jar to Seventh Generation laundry detergent) to the interesting case studies, to the samples of various modern packages would be a fascinating book for anyone to have on their coffee table.

Of course, like many in the design field, the creators of a design product failed to take into account the very topic they describe inside: the packaging design of "Packaging Design" is sub par, even for a standard book. The cover is uninspired and the book is just a square book. Also, there are noticeable misses in the history of packaging design such as the best wine packaging (Bonny Doon) and of course, the brilliant Apple packages (A packaging design book without the iPod??).

All in all, this is a great book on the topic. A history nerd will love the old images and a design nerd will love the case studies. Blame the modern education system for the exorbitant price.

Title says it all - but I wish it had more.

PACKAGING DESIGN: SUCCESSFUL PRODUCT BRANDING FROM CONCEPT TO SHELF by Marianne R. Klimchuk and Sandra A. Krasovec is a delight to the eyes. Full of brilliant photos going quite far back into the late 19th century, all on glossy pages, this book really delivers.

My wife happened to glance at a few pages and remarked how angry it makes her that an old reliable brand suddenly repackages. This book explains, among other things, why that is done. The tactic is a big gamble, yet this book simply clarifies how the modern companies want things to "pop off the shelves". "Eye-catching" is the byword, and it always has been as attested by the older photos here.

A really fun experience for me was seeing the modern process, how talented artists sketch ideas for packaging and retail display. This not-quite-coffee-table-sized book, which is a light and slender paperback considering what is packed into it, will tell all.

Valuable information and photographs, if a touch dry...

As someone in the marketing profession, this book on packaging design piqued my interest...I felt like it could give me some technical, historical, and even psychological insight into the aims and means of design and copy. And to a large extent, it succeeded admirably. Amply illustrated, it's a great crash course, especially rich in information about the evolution of packaging and the modern marketplace. The photos are well-chosen, and with full-color throughout, the examples really pop.

The only downside is that the tone is relatively academic and dry, making it a bit hard to read cover-to-cover. I understand that it's not written with the layperson in mind, but still, a lighter tone would have made it more accessible to a wider range of readers--especially with information this intriguing.

Set in Rotorua, famous tourist spot, this novel offers a view of the city the tourists never see. Brutal, funny, clever, and surprising. I loved it. My tough as nails brother who can never get past the first chapter of a book hasn't stoppped talking about it. Thoroughly recommend.

Hard to put down

A little bizarre at times, but a great read none-the-less that was hard to put down. A very dark novel about gangs and drug culture in New Zealand; a similar setting to Once Were Warriors. It contained a lot of colloquialisms and slang that I think a non New Zealander may struggle to follow.

Great Book

This book is just wonderful.......Definately a must read, the Lisa Whelchel Website was very helpful to me in making my "Purchasing" Decision.

The study book, and book, have both led me to some scriptures that were much needed and appropriate for my situation......Praise God that Lisa followed God and wrote this book!

I do not know where the first person got such horrible ideas from the book, maybe they should read it, as the other reveiwer had reccomended.

My opinion when I bought the book, if I could get just one idea, just one, to help me it would be worth it....I have received a lot more that I planned!

Buy the trade book instead

Lisa Whelchel's "Creative Correction" is a good parenting resource. I was skeptical about the study because my kids are both teenagers: what could I do to better parent at this stage in my kids' lives? But I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only did Lisa and the Lord have some parenting tips for me. They also had in mind to give me a better understanding of my own relationship as a child with God and my parents. I would recommend this study specifically to parents of younger children because they will definitely gain maximum benefit from it, but anyone who is (or plans to be) a parent or in a Christian leadership position would reap wisdom from it as well.

However, the video teaching didn't give me anything that wasn't already in the workbook. And the material in the Bible study workbook comes directly from Lisa's trade book of the same name. So, buy that, instead.

Ok for older kids

I mostly enjoyed this study, and think that the author is well versed, however, my child is between 2 and 3 and many things aren't totally applicable to young ones. Seems like better ideas for 5+. I did enjoy her ideas pages at the end of each chapter for how to teach your kids certain traits. I'll come back to that and maybe reread the study in a few years. The homework was only so-so I felt. I enjoyed the ideas of how each child can be different and needs some "creative thinking" to teach.

A selection for anyone who wants to learn about jetmodels.

I had always been in the dark when it came to jet engines, and with one of my phD siblyings only telling me little of what I really wanted to know, I asked a some modelers what book they would recomend to get started. Each pointed to Kurt Schreckling's book and now I point to it as well. He gives a basic introduction into thermaldynamics and other information that is needed to understand the "why's" of the book, but always keeping in mind teh truth that most people who read it are not enginers or physics majors. The book also gives explainations of the asembly prossess the tools one would need, the parts, and in the back of the book: the plans. The book cold almost be called "The Jetmodelers Cook Book"

Good little book

Overall this is a good book on the basic theory and construction of a model gas turbine and I would recommend it to others with a similar interest. The book looks a little thin, but it is packed with lots of good information in small print.

I could not give the book 4 stars because there are problems with the type setting of the equations. If you already have some mathematical and engineering experience, you can probably figure out what is intended. Otherwise some of the equations could be a little confusing.

It`s good book, with some explanations, but a little old(1994), it`s a excellent book for beguiners who don`t know nothing about model turbines.

We all have our own way of Whistling Past the Graveyard... loved this book

"My daddy says that when you do somethin' to distract you from your worstest fears, it's like whistlin' past the graveyard. You know, making a racket to keep the scaredness and the ghosts away. He says that's how we get by sometimes."

"I thought about how me and Eula finding out each other's secrets had made us both better, and how we both had our own way of whistling past the graveyard."

These two quotes pretty much sum up this wonderful story of a little white girl growing up in South Mississippi in the sixties when racism in the deep south was rearing it's ugly head. I had many thoughts as I was reading this book and the two that came to surface most often was how people often treat children as if they are invisible. And, the dangers of keeping secrets and the damage they can cause. That was Starla... she didn't know it but she was surrounded by secrets and these secrets sent her on a wild goose chase to Nashville to fulfill a dream. Starla felt invisible to everyone around her and had come to believe that she was un-loved, un-wanted and not special... just nothing but trouble. She lived on the dreams that most children have when important things are missing from their lives... like loving parents, siblings and the feeling of being special, needed and important. So, when things hit bottom (at least her idea of bottom)she did what any un-wanted kid had to do... she ran away. On her way to Nashville she meets a colored woman named Eula. As they travel Eula teaches Starla that she has gifts, that she is special and most of all she is loved. Starla and Eula begin to need each other, lean on each other and love each other as family.
Starla learns some valuable and often frightening life lessons on this journey that will inevitably change her forever. She learns that reality quite often bears no resemblance to the dream. And, that people are not always who or what they seem to be. But, most importantly, that we must see beyond the color of someones skin. Ugly comes in all shades!
I loved Starla... she was a red headed spit fire of a girl who had a mouth for trouble but a heart of gold. She was a very misunderstood child mostly because her mouth was always one step ahead of her mind. But, every now and then it worked in her favor.

I truly enjoyed this book... highly recommend!

Whistling Past The Graveyard Review

Let's get that I absolutely LOVE this book out of the way. Whistling Past The Graveyard is a heartwarming, endearing coming of age story about a fiesty 9 year old girl who decides it's high time she flew the coop in an effort not to be sent to boarding school. It's the summer of 1963 in Cayuga Springs, the Fourth of July, and a pocket full of penny candy that puts the wheels in motion for a life-changing experience for two unsuspecting lives that intersect on an abandoned road.

Whistling Past The Graveyard is narrated by Starla who's often described by her grandmother Mamie as a girl who can't stay out of trouble. Starla's personality is as red as her hair and Mamie does not for a second allow Starla to forget that she's a stone's throw from being just like her mother. Mamie is probably one of the characters I like the least but it's probably also because I only have Starla's point of view in her assessment. Not long into Starla's jailbreak she meets Eula, a colored woman with a set of her own problems.

Susan Crandall does an excellent job at so many things in this novel such as character development, being true to the era, and all the things we love and hate about the south. Starla and Eula are an unlikely pair being their race differences as well as age differences. Starla is not afraid of anything and even when she is she doesn't back down. Eula on the other hand has been treated poorly her whole life. They both compliment and complete each other and give the other what they both need most. I love their relationship and readers will appreciate it as well. Crandall really captures what it friendship and family mean.

A lot of blurbs are comparing this novel to the bestseller The Help and I don't think that's a fair assessment. Not that this book isn't on the same level but because I find Whistling Past The Graveyard to be more true to the 60s than The Help. Crandall doesn't sacrifice the tension or danger of the 60s to make for a more sugar-coated, easier pill to swallow for the masses. There were moments I was on the edge of my seat hoping that things would be all right for our two heroines. The only similarities between the two works are the race of the narrators and the period they were written in.

I will say one last time I LOVE Whistling Past The Graveyard. It's about friendship, family, and seeing the just and unjust in life. I recommend this book to lovers of fiction and especially to those who love coming of age stories. Whistling Past The Graveyard reaffirms that in some cases, blood isn't thicker than water.

A heartbreaking yet heartwarming, well written and easy to read coming of age story that illustrates the bonds and loyalties that stem from friendships and what truly makes a "real" family despite blood ties. I couldn't help but be captivated with Starla from the get-go. Her stubbornness, sass, feistiness and sheer determination had me rooting for her from page one. The story flows so easily that I could see the events unfolding clearly in my mind. At times, her one-liners were downright comical, further expressing her unblemished prejudices and adolescence.

One gets a glimpse of what life must have been like in the South with segregation and the early civil rights movement. One knows or has learned what it was like by adult standards, but a fresh new glimpse is told through the eyes of a child. Her child like point of view gives a much more simplistic, innocent and naïve understanding of the social issues and inequalities during those times. I loved her fierceness and how at such a young age she was so determined to speak her mind and stand up for what she felt was right. She was smart beyond her years and unfortunately grew up ever too quickly. She learned hard life lessons at such a young age. A narrative still worth teaching today.

LOVE THIS BOOK! Read in 1 hour and it put me into action!!!
I purchased the top 5 books on the subject and started with this one because it was the smallest....i feel like returning the other 4, this gives me everything i need. i have a few questions that i wish i could email the Riki Roash to ask but otherwise i feel empowered! i sent out 11 letters the next day according to his instructions and now anxiously awaiting responses.

i will follow up to let you know if it worked!

Title is misleading.

I read this book cover to cover in under an hour. For someone who does not understand how credit disputes work, this is a good book. But it does not show you how to remove ALL negative items from the credit report. Instead this light reading book shows how to dispute items on the credit report and hope that they don't get validated. If the items that are being disputed are outdated or not correct, the methods in the book will work. But for recent and valid negatives, the advice in the book may make things worse by giving the creditors the information they need to collect. So it can either work great or back fire big. It is a 50/50 roll, but It definitely will not show you how to remove ALL negative items. The author may have been in the business of removing negatives for 18 years, but the recent changes in the laws in the past few years make the information a little outdated. And the book does not mention how frequently and for what reason credit reporting agencies throw requests out as "frivolous" and how to avoid it.

The best money you will spend

I waited to write this review to find out if the advice in the book truly worked or not. I just got all three of my credit reports back and ALL the negative items were removed. I then ordered my credit reports again just to make sure and all negative items were gone. Now I have A1 credit again and plan to keep it that way. I had medical bills, phone bills, and some odd and ends like a candy and magazine company. If you have any negative items on your report you should get this ebook; it worked for me and now my credit is clean.

Lindsay Camp has been a freelance writer for over 20 years. He began
his career at J Walter Thompson, one of the UK's largest advertising
agencies. He has been invited three times to judge the 'Writing for
Design' category in the D&AD Awards, the advertising and design
industry's Oscars. He has also-uniquely-been nominated twice in one
year for the silver award in this category.
