Grade 9 Up—In this sequel to Geography Club (2003) and Order of the Poison Oak (2005, both HarperCollins), told in flip-book format, Russel and Min answer a casting call for extras for an upcoming horror film. Russel's parents have just discovered that he is gay, and he is devastated by their reaction. Also, an old boyfriend who dumped him turns up at rehearsals and wants to get back together; while the attraction is still there, Russel loves his current boyfriend. On the flip side, Min is lonely and wants a new relationship, but she can't decide if she's willing to have one with Leah, who has chosen not to come out for fear of losing her friends. All of this is played out against the backdrop of movie rehearsals. What is intriguing about the book is how very differently these two characters interpret the same events, and how oblivious each one can be to what is happening to the other. Hartinger handles a number of fairly serious issues here with a lighter touch than in The Order of the Poison Oak, and there is a lot of humor in this book. The characters' narrative voices sound authentically teen, and the section in which Russel tells about his coming out to his parents, their reaction, and his subsequent talk with the family priest particularly rings true. Soul-Sucking Zombie's

You have to read both of their stories to really understand what's going on. I enjoyed both Russell and Min's side of what went on during this little fiasco. Hartinger did a great job explaining every little detail, especially when it came to Middlebrook finally coming out. I really hope in the next book we get to learn more about how everything went with him and the folks. Oh, and especially about KEVIN. :) Poor guy. Gotta love him for what he did.

Split Screen shows teens aren't zombies

Brent Hartinger writes great teen novels: they have strong plots with unforeseeable twists; they're filled with clever dialogue and funny one-liners; and most important, they're stocked with good-hearted (though occasionally wrong-headed) characters who remind readers of what they love about their own friends--their brilliance and loyalty, their passion for their beliefs, and their ability to remember one's good points and still catch one's failings.

Hartinger delivers on all these strengths once again in his new novel "Split Screen." It's the third in a series, but it's a sequel with an innovative spin: it tells the same story twice from two points of view, demonstrating that even best friends experience things differently, and that life's big questions--like who to love, and when to be brave--don't always have just one right answer.

The book follows "The Geography Club" and "The Order of the Poison Oak" to tell the stories of high school student Russell Middleton and his circle of cool but less-than-popular friends. In previous books, Russell and his pals formed a gay-straight alliance to make their school a safer, more open place and then managed to survive summer camp with nothing worse than bruised hearts and itchy rashes. "Split Screen" catches up with them in the fall of their junior year as they sign up to work as extras on the set of a horror movie filming right in their hometown.

When read one way, the book tells Russell's story of boyfriend and parent troubles: just as he's anticipating a Thanksgiving visit from his steady guy, his unsteady ex begins trying to win him back, sending Russ into an emotional spin. And to top it off, Russell's parents come unhinged from reason when they (belatedly) find out that he's gay. It's a mess.

But flip the book over, and the same events are told in a different version by Russell's good friend Min, a brainier-than-thou girl who tries to live her life according to staunch principles. She aspires not just to honesty but to forthrightness, and that sort of candor is causing her problems. Min's new girlfriend (who's completely awesome and totally sharp) is set on being two different people: one version for Min and another entirely for her friends at school. It's also a mess.

Hartinger excels at giving Russell and Min distinct voices and at making their similar struggles unique: Russ is pulled more by his heart whereas Min follows her head--he worries most about being misunderstood or hurting someone; she's terrified at her uncertainty when her clear ideals jam up against life's murkier situations.

This novel's greatest strength (from among many) may be that Hartinger gives both his main characters truly perplexing dilemmas. One could see them choosing either way--the old boyfriend or the new, a path of compromise or one of confrontation--and sympathize with the reasons behind the decision. Rather than present his teen readers with simplistic answers, he instead suggests that the act of deciding is itself the main event: Life can't be lived on autopilot, and no one can choose better than the person in the cockpit.

"Split Screen" brings a great deal of fun, but it also digs deep into exactly the sort of questions that teens face as they go about the hard work of growing up. It's a romp with good friends, and it's a book that gives a lot of respect to the right and responsibility of young people to make important choices for themselves.

Recommended for readers ages 12 and older.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed this book more than I did "The Order of the Poison Oak", and just slightly less than "The Geography Club" (books that also feature the characters in Split Screen.) The reason why I didn't enjoy it as much as "Geography Club" partly has to do with the original always being one's favorite, but that "Split Screen" wasn't long enough. Yes, we do get two full stories but I'd have been happier with one expanded tale focusing on Russel. I admit, I didn't find Min's story as interesting, but she's never been one of my favorite characters anyhow.

That aside, Hartinger's writing has grown stronger and leaner without sacrificing quality or character development. Plus, the unique aspect of a low-budget zombie film is a fun catalyst and the brief glimpses we get of the filmmaking experience are illuminating. I think most people will enjoy this book, and considering Russel's dilemma with his parents, I'm hoping we get another.

About the Author

Julie Anne Laser, PhD, MSW, LCSW, is Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Denver, where she coordinates the high-risk youth track of the MSW curriculum as well as teaches in the clinical and research series. Dr. Laser’s research focus is on adolescent resiliency, particularly the relevance of specific ecological and internal protective and risk factors by culture and gender. She recently completed large studies of resilience in Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and Senegalese youth and homeless teens in the United States. Projects are under way to evaluate resilience in Latin American youth. Dr. Laser has more than 20 years of clinical social work experience and has worked in Mexico, Switzerland, Japan, and China, as well as a variety of urban and rural settings in the United States. She is particularly interested in school social work. Nicole Nicotera, PhD, MSW, LICSW, is Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Denver, where she teaches clinical practice theories and skills and a doctoral research course in qualitative analysis. Dr. Nicotera’s research and scholarship focus on measuring civic development in children, interventions to enhance civic leadership and positive youth development, the influences of neighborhood collective socialization and social cohesion on young people, and issues of unearned privilege and oppression in social work practice, education, and research. Her recent research with young people in public housing neighborhoods examines civic engagement and the capacity of youth to act as agents of neighborhood change. As a clinical social worker, Dr. Nicotera worked with children, youth, and families in a community mental health center, where she used art, play, and sand-tray therapies, as well as other intervention modalities. She also has extensive school social work experience with seriously emotionally and behaviorally challenged children.

It's okay.

My adolescent MH class is using this book at UNC. I like the book because the chapters are concise and get to the point. I should note that the authors could have done a better job of not using pejorative terms (i.e. the use of the word "addict" in the addictions chapter). Also, they seemed to completely dismiss bisexuality as a sexual identity in the sexuality chapter.

Excellent Job!

I’ve followed Rae Magdon’s work for a while, both her fan works and original. While I have enjoyed everything she’s written, this is by far my most favorite. The pacing of the story was phenomenal, the story engaging, and the love scenes (for what book from Rae would be without them) were not overly done and were excellently sweet. I fell in love with all of the characters, even the villain, and I will give the author props for somehow embodying everything that makes cats that sassy roommate that I always wanted back in college.

I highly recommend this read. I believe fans of Fairy Tales with a lady love twist will love this. Great work, Rae! Can’t wait for the sequels to this!

Great Read One Flaw

This was a great story. I loved the magic in it as well as all the characters. The one thing I did not like is that it seemed Eleanor only started to fall for Belladonna after she found out about Bellas feelings for her; before that she didn't really give her any thought at all and nor had she ever been attracted to women before either. If some kind of groundwork had been laid at the start where Eleanor notices Belladonna as more than this person she now lives with it would of gotten 5 stars. But aside from that it is a great story and I highly recommend it.

Adapted from the Cinderella story, this lesbian rendition follows young and innocent Eleanor ("Ellie") whose life takes a dramatic turn for the worse when her father remarries Lady Kingsclere and she is forced to move into Baxstresse Manor with her two new and questionable stepsisters.

Luciana and Belladonna turn out to be quite a pair. Luciana is an evil bitch who tortures and rapes their servants.... sexy and possessive Belladonna gets them in her bed willingly. They are both slutty ol' predators in their own right. So when wholesome and submissive little Ellie shows up, one has plans to take her out, the other wants to take her to bed. Clueless little Ellie is too busy missing home and talking to animals to figure out she's fresh meat. Though her Dr. Doolittle skills with the animals were an amusing part of the story.

Then things really get going when Ellie's father dies and her new stepmother disappears into nervous breakdown mode (or something). Greedy and corrupt Luciana has no intention of sharing her inheritance, and her power-hungry visions extend to taking over the kingdom of Seria. And she's got the stolen magical power to make it happen! Wicked as ever, she banishes Ellie into servitude and takes sadistic pleasure in making those tasks as horrid and painful as possible. Ellie's only respite is the supportive servants, helpful little animals, and her passionate rendezvous with her hot step-sister, Belladonna. Eventually this villain must be confronted and taken down for our happily ever after.

Ah, but I'm probably making this sound more interesting than it actually is. heh. Excellent ideas. But these characters were rather flat. The servants seemed to exist only for emotional appeal. These sisters were a fascinating concept, but they just weren't given much depth. Luciana is a sadist and we never know what makes her tick. She just shows up to do evil crap and nothing more. So two-dimensional. And what's up with her past with her sister...? Belladonna, if you love Ellie that much, WTF ??? Multiple times, I don't understand her choices. And where the hell was she for the first 20-30% of the story?! Presence was too minimal. Don't get me started on her diary. pfft. The romance just didn't emerge too realistically. And Ellie... narrated way too much. Don't just tell me how possessive Belladonna is. Show me. I wanted to see her properly dominated. By both sisters...

We get a very polite prince and a few other mildly interesting characters... but I think the only character I'll remember from this book by next week is the smart aleck talking cat. I enjoyed that. In fact, the romance took so long to emerge that I figured Ellie and the cat might hook up. Hey, I've seen it before in lesfic...

Aside from the flat characters... this just had a very YA feel to it. (Not that there's anything wrong with YA/New Adult... it's just not a genre that appeals to me much.) Or maybe it's just the fairy tale element making it seem somewhat adolescent, I don't know. Maybe this author is just really young. So I was pretty surprised at how explicit the sex actually got, lol... or maybe not so surprised. Quite graphic and I think I lost count of those scenes. It's probably the best part of the book. For me. heh. Ellie's submissiveness was really coming through in those scenes and I found that pretty sexy. And yet, I'd trade that to make space for better character development.

Author seems to have some nice potential, but these fairy tale renditions are not typically my cup of tea.

Nice but nothing new

As much as I like the author's "Building Construction", this book is not recommended. It is based on the premise that many construction details share common principles: shed water by using sloping surfaces, for instance. After a few such groupings are described, it turns into a tips and tricks collection, e.g., do rough work before finish work. It's not a comprehensive reference by any means. On the contrary, it's shamefully padded with many nearly blank pages. Enjoyable reading, nice drawings, just not nearly enough material to justify the price.

Concise and to the point!

This book is the recipe to designing architectural details. The book is divided into many small but concise sections each dealing with different aspects e.g, controlling water leakage, accommodating movements, providing structural support, forgiving details, etc. In each of these sections various solutions and stategies to deal with these aspects are shown with simple easy to understand diagrams accompanied by a brief explanation. A chapter at the end is dedicated to developing and designing the architectural details through choosing and combining solutions disscussed in the sections with illustrated examples.
This book is the essence to "designing" or merely to "understanding" architectural details. The structure and simplicity of this book makes it almost like a dictionary of architectural details. This book is suitable for students, practicing architects, and those who are interested in the detailing of architecture. Note: in my opinion this book is of a reference nature and not recommended for leisure reading.

Brilliant and indispensible

This book is the thinking person's "Graphic Standards" (no slight to that book intended). But in this case, instead of handing you details, it teaches you how to design your own details. It is not only a one-of-a-kind approach but incredibly well-done, well organized, and beautifully illustrated as well. It is a guide to knowing why details should be designed in particular ways. It explains, in depth, what to think about when designing at the level of the detail. And the three case studies in the back of the book are worth their weight in gold. This book truly makes the point that detailing is part of the process of design. Get it, and keep it.

About the Author
Bruce Tremper is one of the nation's foremost experts on avalanches and has been the director of the US Forest Service's Utah Avalanche Center since 1986. He coordinated all backcountry avalanche safety preparations for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City. He lives in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Still a lot of info for a primer: very specialized avalanche knowledge

I got Tremper's full text, "Staying Alive in avalanche terrain", as well as this condensed version, and the more concise "Snow Sense" by Fredston/Fesler. Among these texts from what seem to be the top experts in the field of avalanche knowledge, I would consider this the advanced level book, with "Staying Alive" the most comprehensive and specialized, and "Snow Sense" the best general introduction on best practices in avalanche terrain for the average outdoor enthusiast.

Fantastic book comparable to level 1 course

This book is the perfect book for someone to get with no prior formal avalanche training. I had already had level 1 certification and got this book to push my knowledge towards a level 2 ability by being able to back up CAIC reports with real on the fly touring data for improved decision making, but this book is not quite at that level. I would HIGHLY recommend this book for someone seeking initial avalanche knowledge and am very pleased with the pictures and the analysis of route choices in this book! Definitely something that should be on a back country skiers shelf!

Similar to Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain

This seems to be an updating field version of Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain. There is new info about the human factor and using preset rituals to avoid common mistakes in avy terrain. There is still a lot of good insight in here, but overall, a lot of the book is recycled from his previous work.
