Book never arrived

I waited for 24 days and the book never arrived. I am assuming it got lost on route. I emailed the seller for a refund and he kindly refunded my money. Overall, the responses to my emails for timely. The book never arrived so it was a most unfortunate experience, since I needed that book for school.

The only problem I had with this book was someone had written in the answers to the practice problems, so I will have to go through and erase them to get good practice. Otherwise, it's in great condition and was just what I was looking for on recommendation from my professor.

About the Author

Haijiang Wang is a senior research officer, manager of multiprojects, and the core competency leader of the Unit Fuel Cell Team in the National Research Council Canada Institute for Fuel Cell Innovation (NRC-IFCI). He is also an adjunct professor at five universities, including the University of British Columbia and the University of Waterloo. With 25 years of experience in electrochemistry and fuel cell technology, Dr. Wang has published more than 100 journal and conference papers and has been issued three patents. His research focuses on novel fuel cell design and materials as well as fuel cell diagnosis and durability.

Xiao-Zi Yuan is a research officer and project leader of the Unit Fuel Cell Team in the National Research Council Canada Institute for Fuel Cell Innovation (NRC-IFCI). Dr. Yuan has published more than 80 journal and conference papers and holds five patents in China. Her research focuses on PEM fuel cell design, testing, diagnosis, and durability.

Hui Li is a research council officer and technical leader for the PEM Fuel Cell Failure Mode Analysis project and PEM Fuel Cell Contamination Consortium in the National Research Council Canada Institute for Fuel Cell Innovation (NRC-IFCI). Dr. Li has coauthored more than 30 journal papers and has technology licensed to the Mantra Energy Group. Her research focuses on PEM fuel cell contamination and durability testing, the preparation and development of electrochemical catalysts with long-term stability, catalyst layer/cathode structure, and catalyst layer characterization and electrochemical evaluation.

mild disappointment

Its a good story and enjoyable characters but once again im left wondering WHY i spent money on another Stormy Glenn book. I swore once never to do so again because she tends to promise a lot in the first few chapters that she inevitably never follows up on, and tends to often pull weird rabbits out of obscure hats with no foreshadowing. And it happened again. I was all set to enjoys excitment between all the Cades Creek folks and Sammys and Phoebes familys and then - nothing, nothing but a few hasty narratives. Its like she gets tired of the story or just in a hurry to get it done and stops developing the story line. Abd where the heck did Darla come from? Early in the book shes a pleasant nurse and then she suddenly appears as a psycho arsonist with a gun. No forshadowing. Too contrived. Disappointing and frustrating. Again im making a pact with myself not to spend money on her books.

Lies and distrust. Early in a relationship they are deadly. In Starting Something, Stormy Glenn’s fifth installment of the Cade Creek series, Hank and Sammy learn that lesson first hand. Sammy and Hank find themselves gutted by betrayal and finding to strength to overcome their fears may cost more than they have. I love how Ms. Glenn quickly takes us on an emotional high followed by a devastating low only to show us the painstaking crawl toward happily ever after. How in the heck was she going to get Sammy and Hank back together in a believable fashion? I didn’t think she could pull it off but was pleasantly surprised. Sammy and Hank fought hard for each other. They moved past their hurt feelings and emotional fears. I loved that Ms. Glenn made it easy and hard all at once and I quite enjoyed the journey. Sammy was loyal and fun loving. Hank was a bit deeper but together they fit. With the help of family and friends I found myself rooting for them. Ms. Glenn gave us a story that moved along at a good pace even while she gave a depth to her characters. The journey was heartfelt and believable. The struggles felt real. This was a well written and thoughtful story. I am looking forward to where she will take us next with the residents of Cade Creek.

Starting Something but Completed Nothing

Feels like the book was started then not finished until months later. Sammy and Hank story is under developed and the characters are short changed. You would think that Sammy and Hank had never been together based on the barn scene. Minor storylines are unresolved (Phoebe) or come out of left field without background. There is a lot of potential that was missed in this book. It should be revised and expanded.

I've liked this series, but have had to pick and choose which books to read.

review of prince claimed ( the thresl chronicles)

i wasnt sure about this book if i was going to like it or not. I have read the first one and i thought that is was really good. i have also read a lot of Amber Kell's books and i understand her way of going her books. so after reading the first book and loving it so much i just new i had to get the 2nd one. now after reading the 2nd one i can't wait for the 3rd one.

There is something I see happen on occasion in romances that involves bond mates, destined mates, or where there is something other than just true love at play. That something happened in the pages of Prince Claimed and it stole my romance. Bleine and Sarler became bond mates in the previous book. Both being straight men I just knew there would be an amazing love story with their book. They were going to have to find a way to their happily ever after. They would have struggles to overcome as a bonded pair of essentially strangers. These were things I was looking forward to. I was greatly disappointed. The bond solved all the potential issues. I need a little romance with insta-mate.

There were some advancements made within the world. Bleine and Vohne are researching the Theslan history, prophecies, and translated journals from a powerful seer. As with all prophecies they have vague hints to possible occurrences. There is still some turmoil that Vohne must settle. I have to admit this was the portion of the book that I found most fascinating. I especially enjoyed what Bleine found while on an expedition trip. I also hope to see more of that in the next book.

I do plan to continue reading Amber Kell's Thresl Chronicles. I've enjoyed the world and how it works. I'm also curious where several things are going. The new things that were introduced in this installment of the series has me very curious.

The reading for me

I was looking forward for Bleine&Sarler's book after their rocky mate beginning in book one. It surprised me that there was so little of the GFY trope and that Bleine, who had never had a male mate would struggle with the bond to a male mate , not Sarler, but it was really great how they came to an agreement pretty quickly that they both wanted their bond to work out and made everything it took for that.

The Single Most Important Book on Education

That the world we now live in is unsustainable goes without saying. Our skyrocketing population puts enormous pressure on the productive and absorptive capacities of the land, outstripping the natural carrying capacity of the planet by some twenty percent. As ever more fisheries collapse, forests shrink, rangelands deteriorate, soils erode, species vanish, temperatures rise, rivers run dry, water tables fall, ozone depletion expands and polar ice caps melt across the globe, the single most important question humanity has faced resonates ever louder: How can we live sustainably?

Orr argues that the ecological crisis is not technological problem that we can fix with some new-fangled gadgetry or updated economic models. Rather, the "disordering of ecological systems and the great biogeochemical cycles of the earth reflects a prior disorder in the thought, perception, imagination, intellectual priorities, and loyalties inherent in the industrial mind." In other words, ecological crisis is a crisis of education. And yet, as Orr makes so clear, "we continue to educate the young for the most part as if there were no planetary emergency."

The effects of our educational system are not only bad for the planet, according to Orr, but bad for us as well. Contemporary "education...alienates us from life in the name of human domination, fragments instead of unifies, overemphasizes success and careers, separates feeling from intellect and the practical from the theoretical, and unleashes on the world minds ignorant of their ignorance." In effect, we educate a society to get straight As and fail Life.

Rather than educating for upward mobility, globally competitive economic success or increased technological cleverness, Orr recommends that we need educate for "ecological design intelligence" in an effort to foster "healthy, durable, resilient, just, and prosperous communities." "The world does not need more rootless symbolic analysts," says Orr. "It needs instead hundreds of thousands of young people equipped with the vision, moral stamina, and intellectual depth necessary to rebuild neighborhoods, towns, and communities around the planet. The kind of education presently available will not help them much. They will need to be students of their places and competent to become, in Wes Jackson's words, "native to their places.'"

What would a sane, place-centered economy look like? "A sane civilization," says Orr, "would have more parks and fewer shopping malls; more small farms and fewer agribusinesses; more prosperous small towns and smaller cities; more solar collectors and fewer strip mines; more bicycle trials and fewer freeways; more trains and fewer cars; more celebration and less hurry; more property owners and fewer millionaires and billionaires; more readers and fewer television watchers; more shopkeepers and fewer multinational corporations; more teachers and fewer lawyers; more wilderness and fewer landfills; more wild animals and fewer pets." A sane civilaiton would not advocate unending economic growth at the expense of all planetary life. "Utopia?" he asks. "No! In our present circumstances it is the only realistic course imaginable. We have tried utopia and can no longer afford it."

Rather than offering utopian idealism, Orr sticks closely to the stark environmental consequence of our industrial society, the failures of our philosophical heritage, and the ecological crisis our educational system spawns, offering practical advice for change at every stage of the argument. Without implementing his pedagogical advice, one cannot expect things to get better.

Without a doubt THE BEST work on education I have ever read, yet one need not have any interest in education to appreciate the import of Orr's thesis. This book is critical for the health of our bodies, minds, and the greater economic and ecological systems those bodies and minds operate within.

Inspiration for The Wicker Man

David Pinner's Ritual opens in the English village of Thorn where the dead body of 8 year old Dian Spark is found by an oak tree. Suspicion is stirred by the fact she is holding a sprig of garlic and the press raise the question of a ritual killing. Enter Detective Inspector David Hanlin, a no nonsense police officer despatched from London to investigate the incident, and whose eyes remain almost permanently behind a pair of shades as he suffers from sun blindness.

Hanlin begins with Reverend White at his church who insists the village is a Christian one, but David notices the altar cross is missing, to which the Reverend insists it often disappears and reappears again. However, the holy man is outraged when David finds a monkey's head and garlic flowers on the altar.

Events cut to a seance being conducted by Dian's mother to ascertain if her child was murdered. Meanwhile, David is exploring the wood and is taken by Gypo, the local nutter, to the oak tree where Dian was found. The monkey's head is back, along with two bats pinned along side it.

Back at the seance, Mrs. Spark claims there is witchcraft in the village and some of those present are involved. The accusation stirs up hysteria among the group, until the village squire takes control, suggesting the police should be brought in. Quite conveniently, he then makes the acquaintance of David Hanlin when Anna brings the detective back to the house to give him lodging.

Hanlin initially spends his time visiting and getting to know the leading village characters. He visits Lawrence Cready, a rather camp character who had bought Squire Fenn's mansion, when Fenn had become debt ridden. Although Cready does have a witchcraft museum in his manor, he insists to David it is merely memorabilia. However, Hanlin discovers a doll falls with a pin stuck through its abdomen and the name Dian written across the back, when it falls out of the pocket of one of the local children, Fat Billy. The child goes hysterical, claiming he hated Dian and that her mother is a witch, but denies killing her. The boy is later found dead by the same oak tree.

Events come to a head when Hanlin receives an invitation from Cready to be initiated in a moon worshipping ceremony the villagers are holding. He goes. The villagers are dressed as animals, including two march hares, while Cready is dragged up as a man-woman. The proceedings end up on the beach at a bonfire flanked by an altar of stones where a white horse is sacrificed. The whole thing appears becomes hysterical, setting off a chain of accusation and counter accusation, before Hanlin eventually struggles and discovers the identity of the killer in a twist that no one sees coming.

If Ritual is famous for anything, it is as the novel Anthony Schaffer first considered for adaptation before deciding to do his own thing, which led to The Wicker Man. Ritual is very rich in its language. The problem is that, at times, this richness becomes over opulent in terms of dialogue. Virtually everyone in Thorn appears to be a budding poet or raconteur. The dialogue, at times, is amusing in its perversity ("Bullies always get their comeuppance! St. Valentine's Day is always hanging around some old garage!"), sometimes distracting ("You shouldn't gallop about in Gods house, you know!...God usually has his midday hibernation approximately now. He has to work very hard!"), often unbelievable in its absurdity ( "Who would dare, during my angelical reign, who would dare place a shrunken anthropoid's head on my high altar! This is really removing Lucifer's trousers."). It is difficult to judge whether Pinner simply got carried away or is deliberately having a laugh, given that the writer himself has stated Ritual to be "blackly, ironically humorous".

Pinner's characters are interesting. David Hanlin is a trickster, a man who is not always what he appears to be. He hides his eyes behind sunglasses, though is more for medical reasons than shielding himself from others. Throughout the book, Hanlin tells lies in order to further investigation, yet keeps telling himself he does not like lying; a symptom/prefiguring of his split personality perhaps? The supporting characters resemble a Hammer horror rep of the day, missing only the "arr, ye be stranger around here." Lawrence Cready, the main protagonist, is a wonderfully repulsive old queen of a man and is the containment of the only supernatural element of Ritual. Mrs.Spark, the murdered girl's mother, rebounds between grieving desperation and hysteria. Anna Spark is not unlike Willow in The Wicker Man; a sexual temptress.

Like language, Ritual is enriched in imagery, though not as over opulent. The novel opens with a butterfly - a symbol of metamorphosis - fluttering around the murdered Dian. Pinner plants the suggestion that the insect is Dian transformed, floating around her own dead body like a freed spirit. This is reinforced later when the butterfly lands on her Mrs. Spark's breast during the seance, the child returning to the source of maternal comfort. The insect is subsequently killed by Fat Billy. He is later accused of killing Dian, which he denies but admits he wanted to kill her. Maybe he did in killing the butterfly.

Pinner invests the novel with some memorable set pieces, such as the ritual slaughter of the horse or Cready's invasion/manipulation of Hanlin's unconscious mind. While these scenes add colour to the proceedings, they remain incidental rather than integral to the story. Cready's mind contact with Hanlin, being the only supernatural element in Ritual, particularly stands out of step with the remainder of the tale.

I would not be surprised if an enterprising publisher one day reprints it as the book that inspired The Wicker Man (I am only surprised no one already has). Until then, I would beg, borrow, perhaps not steal a copy if you can; Ritual remains a curiously engaging read.

Oddly compelling story

I read "The Ritual" because I heard that it was the story that was the basis for the superb 1970s British thriller, "The Wicker Man". I had to borrow it through the interlibrary loan system at my university because the book is out of print. It was worth the effort because it was such an intriguing and amusing story.

Though I believe it was quite different from the narrative of the "The Wicker Man", there are a few similarities. First, a detective comes to a rural British village to investigate a case involving a young girl. There are strangely occult activities occurring in the village. There is an attractive young woman who attempts to seduce the officer, particularly in a passage that clearly inspired the (in)famous wall-slapping scene with Britt Eckland.

But the film diverged from the book's narrative in significant ways that, I think, made for a superior film than it would have been had the screenplay been lifted directly from this book. Specifically, the terrifying ending of "The Wicker Man" was not the same as the end of "The Ritual". In fact, I was expecting that the titular ritual would describe the same shocking conclusion as that of the film. Since it did not, it's unclear precisely what ritual the book is about, although I suspect it refers to what the investigator perceived as having happened in the village.

Regardless of its weaknesses (some corny inner monologues, awkward dialog, choppy insertion of superficially supernatural elements), this book is worth reading because it is engrossing and entertaining, even funny. It's also strangely poetic and beautiful. Finally, I also love a story with an ambiguous protagonist and that is what "The Ritual" offers.

The Rattan Man.

David Pinner, Ritual (Finders Keepers, 1967)

I find it absolutely staggering that Ritual was out of print for as long as it was before being resurrected by Finders Keepers--a music collective, not a press--in 2011. After all, Ritual is the novel that Robin Hardy and Anthony Shaffer loosely adapted to create The Wicker Man, one of filmdom's enduring classics (despite the slight loss of luster form the abortion foisted on the world as a "reimagining" in 2006). According to Finders Keepers' preface to the new edition, Christopher Lee had optioned the book himself back in the sixties, but Lee, Hardy, and Shaffer, after the deal fell through, thought the source material was too good to pass up and, in essence, cooked up their own version by changing a few key elements. And yes, you will be able to see a good deal of similarity between the two stories.

Plot: Eight-year-old Dian Spark falls to her death while climbing a tree. Or so it would seem; why would she be climbing a tree whilst clutching a garlic blossom? Big-city inspector David Hanlin is called in to investigate, and the more the clannish villagers try to keep the incident to themselves, the harder he tries to break through their shell, until the Mayday festival reveals all to everyone involved...

Since the question that's going through your head right now is "is it as good as The Wicker Man?" I'll start by telling you the answer is no. Nor is it as good as Hardy and Shaffer's novelization of Shaffer's script (cf. review 29Mar04 ish). While there are certainly bits where the Shaffer team should have cleaved more closely to Ritual--Hanlin is far more a nuanced character than Neil Howie's paragon of Christian goodness, for example--Pinner is simply not as good a writer as Shaffer. The prose is oft times as purple as the book's cover, and for a rural town, everyone in it feels so... urbane. This is not necessarily a bad thing--if this town existed in the real world, it would be tops on my list of places to move--but it does require a great deal of suspension of disbelief. Also, there are a few places where Pinner seems to let one fact or another of one of his subplots et beyond his control. Never for a long time, and never enough to entirely derail the book, but enough to jar.

If you're a Wicker Man fan (and isn't everyone?), this is essential reading. On the other hand, if the movie's not your cup of tea, this isn't one to go seeking out. ** ½

Excellent coverage of systems engineering methods applied to healthcare

I teach a health systems engineering course to MBA and MS students pursuing degrees in operations management. I have selected Griffin et al.’s Health Systems Engineering as a textbook for my course because it provides excellent coverage of relevant healthcare topics, as well as many rich examples that explore how different types of models can be applied to provide in insight on specific healthcare issues. In particular, in addition to covering more traditional problems addressed by operations management/industrial engineering (such as patient flow, capacity management, and supply chains), the book includes chapters on healthcare financing and health data/informatics. Case studies provide detailed illustrations of how systems engineering methods can be applied to specific problems; a wide range of methods and problems are covered. For example, system dynamics is explored in the context of care of chronic kidney disease, lean and six sigma methodologies are outlined in examples such as discharge rounding and emergency department triage, data mining is explored in the context of predicting Parkinson’s disease, and optimization is explored for staffing and operating room scheduling. Data visualization, queuing, simulation, and forecasting are also introduced.

The book provides detailed examples that cover a variety of different problems and methods, so no particular area is covered in great detail. Each chapter ends with an extensive list of references, to support additional investigation however. The book focuses on the application of methods in healthcare, so does not introduce methods in great detail. If used in a course where students have a background in systems engineering methods, model formulations are often presented and might be explored more deeply. Exercises are included at the end of each chapter, and in general challenge students to think about how methods might be applied to related problems, with a greater emphasis on conceptual formulation rather than on solving small-scale problems. Overall, the book provides a comprehensive exploration of how systems engineering approaches can be used to develop insights about a variety of healthcare issues.
