A former journalist tells the life story of an incredible pediatricheart surgeon in this hybrid biography and report of life inside theoperating room.
Oristano (A Sportscaster's Guide to Watching Football, 2013, etc.), who started his career covering professional sports, began volunteering at Children's Medical Center in Dallas in 1997. There, hemet Dr. Kristine Guleserian while working in the surgery recovery room,and he decided to record the story of her career. He begins by breakingdown a day in the life of "Dr. G," his nickname for her, as he observesher at work. He does a fantastic job of bringing the atmosphereof the operating room to life and offers a behind-the-scenes look at abustling hospital environment ("Doctors and nurses in scrubs and labcoats shuffle into the room, many with the ubiquitous cup of Starbucksin hand"). These moments allow readers to enter the hidden world ofthose who routinely save lives, and he describes places andprofessionals that some healthy people may never meet. After setting the scene, Oristano introduces some of the harrowing stories ofGuleserian's patients, all young children who've suffered due todebilitating heart conditions. He interviews their families about theirexperiences, and one mother sums up the attitude of many parents of sick children when she wonders how to thank the woman who "literally savedyour child's life." Interspersed with these emotional stories isGuleserian's own history, told in her own words. Oristano weaves thesethreads together to create a book that's both a biography and anin-depth look at the lives of patients and families who spend most oftheir time in hospitals, and who put all their hopes and fears in thehands of others. Dr. G, as she's known, is one of the most dedicated, talented people I've ever known. Her dedication to her patients is immense. But best of all. She is an ordinary woman with an extraordinary skill set. It was a privilege to work on this project, and to be able to tell a story so much worth telling.

About the Author
Mark Oristano's 30-year journalism career included NFL broadcasts for both the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Oilers, including two Super Bowls. Mark was the sports voice of the celebrated Ron Chapman Morning Show on KVIL-FM in Dallas for 15 years. He teamed with some of America's top broadcasters during his career including Verne Lundquist, his broadcast mentor, and Oprah Winfrey, with whom he co-anchored at WLAC-TV in Nashville. Mark has been volunteering at Children's Medical Center in Dallas since 1997. He's the author of A Sportscaster's Guide to Watching Football.

An Insider’s Tour With One of American’s Top Pediatric Heart Surgeons

In this detailed account with “a day in the life of” feel with a pediatric heart surgeon, we are given an insiders look at the amazing, life-saving world of American medicine.

Dr. Kristine Gulerserian has opened up her ER to writer Mark Oristano to create a compelling book that shows us a positive side of medicine, and the miracles that are performed on a daily basis to save the lives of others. Most touching to me, as a mother, are that her patients are children. Can you imagine literally holding the life of someone else’s child in your hands? How would that feel? Dr. G. does a great job of telling us just that.

Readers get to follow 2-year-old Rylynn, who was born with a heart defect that is often fatal. They get to see young Andrew, a baseball player, throw a ball in Fenway park 13 weeks after a heart transplant. They also get to follow the doctor on her rounds, consulting with parents, and of course, into the operating room itself. I have always wondered how surgeons worked for 14 hours straight in an operating room. Did they get to eat? Drink? Use the bathroom? This book answers those questions and more.

Also inspiring to me was Dr. G’s ascent in an often male-dominated field. She is not only a great surgeon, she is considered one of America’s best. This book is inspiring in so many ways, and co-writer Mark Oristano did a remarkable job of bringing it to life. There is even humor to round out the drama (certain parts brought this mother to tears!).

The book is full of photos of Dr. G at work (and in life), diagrams of heart problems, and even case notes. It’s a very compelling read. I highly recommend this book.

Great Book!

Great book! Great story of a great congenital heart surgeon! You will never meet a more dedicated pediatric surgeon than Kris Guleserian. She fights the toughest battles in cardiac surgery, from switch procedures to cardiac transplantation in the smallest of children. Her patients are the truly innocent ones. They didn’t smoke or eat themselves into their heart disease and are powerless to fight for themselves. Kris steps onto the high-risk battlefield and fights for them. Her attention to detail, her dedication, and her work ethic are unmatched and it shows in her superb surgical results and in this well-written book. Despite her very great skill, Kris is so humble that I am amazed that this book was ever written. Great job by Mark Oristano to keep pressing, keep up with her, and get it done.
From the very first page right up to the climactic ending, this book will entertain you with the real life wit, humor, and drama that populates the world of pediatric cardiac surgery. It is truly inspirational to read the exploits of a woman who has, through great perseverance, stamina, and resolve, made it to the top of perhaps the most prolific “Old Boys’ Clubs” in modern day medicine. Great surgeon, great person, great story. Highly recommend it.

Surgeon’s Story provides a front row seat to the complex world of congenital heart defects. Congenital heart disease impacts more lives than any other birth defect. Warriors like Dr. G fight the battle everyday. Her passion to help those with congenital heart defects is vivid as you read each page. The book is an easy read for anyone who has ever been exposed to congenital heart defects or those interested in learning more. I’m living proof of the amazing work done by surgeons like Dr. G. Keep fighting!

Kinetic sculptures are amphibious, human powered works of art, but they may be better described as colossal propelled pool gizmos engineered to run on ingenuityand inspired by, well the inspiration can be from anything.

Previous years’ entries included Cake on A Lake with a bee-hived hairdo beauty popping out of a tiered cake as the pastry made its way down the harbor (the beehive is one of Baltimore’s gifts to the world).

Past entries have also included a mobile beaver lodge, the Shrimptastic float complete with support shrimp on bikes, the nine-seater PLATYPUS (Personal Longrange All-Terrain Yacht Proven Un-Safe) and the perennial plastic poodle Fifi.

Sculptures are optimistically engineered to withstand the 15 mile course that encompasses city streets, a sand trap, a mud hazard and a regatta in the harbor. Bribes are de rigueur for the officials who line the course dressed in costumes holding chicken-on-a-stick signs.

After eight hours awards are bestowed including the Golden Flipper, Sock Creature of the Universe (a sock puppet is required of each team), Next to Last and the Dinosaur Award for the most memorable breakdown along the race.

Winners of the race are then eligible to compete in the World Championships in Arcata California, providing both pilot(s) and sculpture have survived.

Baltimore is also home to the Baltimore Orioles, the Ravens, art museums, shopping, historic sites, and several colleges. But let’s face it, for one day, all that matters is the race - For the Glory!

About the Author
STREETWISE® is the first map to be designed with modern graphics and is the originator of the laminated, accordion-fold map format. We’ve set the standard that every map company has imitated but never duplicated. Our mission is to make you feel comfortable, to make you feel safe in a place where you’ve never been before and to enable you to experience a familiar place more fully.

The company was founded in 1984 by Michael Brown, who had been in international publishing for many years, setting up subsidiaries for textbook publishers. In the 1970’s, Brown traveled extensively throughout Africa, India, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Brown would take a large paper map, cut out the city center, folded it up and slip it into his pocket, thus preventing him from looking like a tourist in areas where discretion is the better part of travel. This was his tool for surviving.

After many years on the road, Brown settled back in New York and decided to start his own business, based on the adaptations he had made to maps in his travels. His goal was to give someone the ability to navigate easily in unfamiliar terrain.

He started with a new map format: the accordion fold. Such a simple idea, but at the time it was revolutionary. No more struggling to fold an awkward, oversized paper map. This new format would enable the user to blend in like a native, instead of stick out like a tourist. Brown then added lamination to ensure that the map would be a lasting tool.

More important than the format was the design of the map itself. It had to be a map that not only succeeded above and beyond any map he had used, but was esthetically appealing as well. The look of it had to be as striking as the functionality. Color was introduced in a way that was never seen before in a map - vivid purple for water, soothing gray for the background of street grids, gold to highlight elements of the map. Clarity, conciseness and convenience in a very stylish package.

Building the business was a 24 hour job. Brown sold the maps during the day, zipping around Manhattan making deliveries on his Harley Davidson. At night he packed the orders and did the design work. More titles were added, each title requiring months of research and design.

Today, STREETWISE® produces over 130 titles for major destinations, regions and countries throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Europe, the United Kingdom and Asia. We have grown from the back of a motorcycle to selling millions of maps around the world.

Not really "Streetwise": no detailed map of Royal Mile and New Town

At a minimum, I thought the Streetwise Edinburgh map would have an enlarged map of the Royal Mile and New Town, as these areas have the great majority of tourist sights. Instead, these areas are just a tiny part of the largely unreadable map of central Edinburgh. Perversely, there is an enlarged detailed and easily legible map of Leith, but the Royal Yacht Britannia (Leith's big tourist attraction) barely makes it onto the edge of the map. Although laminated and all on one sheet, the addition of a map of the Firth of Forth area and a map of all of Scotland makes this unnecessarily bulky when folded. As another reviewer has commented, this revised version also does not show Edinburgh's not-so-new tram line. For a 3-day visit to Edinburgh proper, I have absolutely no use for a map of the entire country, or even the Firth of Forth, but I would have greatly appreciated a more detailed map of the city itself.

right size and scale

I find these Streetwise maps in general very useful. They have a lot of detail but not too much and are a good size not to be conspicuous, especially if you're the type that doesn't use a smartphone. I love Charleston and visit at every opportunity, which still isn't often enough to have downtown memorized. This map is just what I need. It has two different scale maps of the lower peninsula, and two different scale maps of the environs, which is useful for driving. Plus a small map of North Charleston near the airport.

There is one minor error on the maps of downtown. The church at the corner of Broad and Legare is the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, not as the 2012 edition reads, St. John the Divine.

Otherwise, nice map and great value for the price.

Walking Edinburgh...

"Streetwise Edinburgh" is a handy and updated (revised 2008) guide to walking Edinburgh, the fine capital of Scotland, and driving in its immediate environs. "Streetwise Edinburgh" is actually five maps contained on one laminated and folding sheet.

On one side, there is a 1:2,200,000 scale map of Scotland, showing the principal roads and geographic features and probably detailed enough for a general orientation. Cappadocia, a province in central Turkey, offers the traveler a startling rockscape whose cones, pleats, and folds conceal hundreds of monasteries and churches carved from the soft, porous "tuff" and used by Christian communities over nearly two millennia for shelter, burial, and sanctuary. This region in the Turkish hinterland is recognized as one of the centers of Byzantine mural painting. However, numerous hermitages, monasteries, and independent chapels dating from the seventh century onward reveal it also as one of the most concentrated areas of Eastern monasticism.

This book serves a double purpose: it provides a thorough and lucid introduction to the rockcut churches and monasteries and their painted decorations, while it critically examines current scholarship on the monastic environment of Byzantine Cappadocia -- particularly in regard to the architecture, which has been generally neglected by art historians.

Scooped out rather than constructed, this anonymous architecture has its own unique appeal. Kostof writes: "The Cappadocian carver-architect was not inhibited... by statics or the nature of materials. His structure stood, a monolith, before he started to work on it. And he could cut into this monolith quickly, effortlessly. It might take a single man about a month to carve out a large room of two to three thousand cubic feet. Loads and thrusts were negligible. One was free to try any structural symbol with little concern for structural safety. Cupolas could bubble from flat ceilings, or be placed over square bays by means of the most cavalier transition elemenis. No shape need be perfect: extemporaneous geometry is everywhere the rule. Wall lines sag, one half of an arch doesn't quite match the other, carefree deviations, here and there, mark the general outline of the building.

Following an account of the region, its environmental, political, and religious history, the author discusses in detail the building types and painting programs in the context of their creation--answering such questions as what was the nature of monasticism in Cappadocia, and who were the builders, the artists, their patrons? The author was born and educated in Turkey, and his personal knowledge of the monuments is a convincing factor in his handling of chronological and stylistic uncertainties. Throughout, Kostof's mind's eye never leaves the total environment, observing the inseparability of landscape, buildings, paintings, and the ritual that informs them.

In Cappadocia, a bleak and relatively barren section of south central Turkey, nature has provided a moonscape environment replenished with a wild and at times bizarre array of rock formation. It was in this remote, forbidding area that Byzantine monks from approximately 500 through 1200 A.D. created a strange, unreal world of rock-cut hermitages, monasteries, and churches. Kostof's study is comprehensive. It presents a catalog of the major rock-cut buildings and then painstakingly examines their architectural styles and the numerous styles of mural paintings that cover many of their walls and ceilings... the book beautifully conjures up a sense and a feel for the place, its man-made artifacts, and the beliefs of the men who lived there. The excellent, very enjoyable text is supplemented by many... black-and-white plates, and revealing line drawings of plans, elevations, and cross sections.

A haunting book about a... remote architectural and topographical marvel. In a lunar, rocky region of central Turkey, visited by Saint Paul and converted early to Christianity, churches and monasteries were carved directly into the soft cliffs. The rockscape itself is eerie: there are photographs of strangely folded white hills and free-standing cone like formations eaten away by wind, with residues of harder rock perched on their summits like hats. The anonymous architecture hollowed out inside the slopes dates from the seventh century; itis fantastically resourceful in its response to a peculiar environment. In their chaste, no-nonsense design, MIT's books are consistently handsome, and this one is particularly so.

Extremely helpful, but maybe not for beginners

I think this may be my first amazon review, but I had to respond after seeing two very negative reviews about this book. First, I can understand that this book can be confusing, as it dives right in to functional programming (FP) without a primer or appendix to help beginners. (I strongly recommend [defmacro - Functional Programming For The Rest of Us](http://www.defmacro.org/ramblings/fp.html) for that purpose.) However, as an intermediate developer with an (apparently) above-average exposure to FP, I found this book to be extremely illuminating and incredibly useful for me to advance to the next level of FP understanding.

Sidenote: One reviewer asserts that the author is confused and perhaps lacks knowledge. I don't know Neal Ford, but I am very familiar with the output of the company at which he works - ThoughtWorks. I can say for certain that anyone employed by them for years is certainly knowledgeable about software engineering, particularly when it comes to real-world usage.

Why did I find the book so valuable?
* As you can see from the [hosted code](https://github.com/oreillymedia/functional_thinking), Ford accompanies all of his code examples with unit tests, which I find essential for understanding and trust.
* Most examples are done in Clojure (a LISP variant for the JVM), Groovy (a dynamic JVM language), **and** Java 8 (sometimes using the Functional Java library), as well as a number in Scala. I find that comparisons between languages improve my learning and retention, in addition to giving extra perspective.
* Ford guides the reader through the mix of terminology for the essential FP functions and how they differ by language: map (when it is called 'collect' and why; a.k.a select), reduce (when it is called 'collect'; plus how it differs from fold), and filter (a.k.a. where).
* All concepts are followed by (or introduced with) example code - this is not just a theory book.
* Some Design Patterns are reviewed and translated to their FP equivalents, which are often simpler.
* He provides the best explanation of recursion I've ever read:
"In reality, [recursion is] a computer-sciencey way to iterate over things by calling the same method from itself, reducing the collection each time, and always carefully ensuring you have an exit condition. Many times, recursion leads to easy-to-understand code because the core of your problem is the need to do the same thing over and over to a diminishing list."
* Ford also provides a helpful explanation of Currying vs partial application (better in context, but here is the crux):
"Currying describes the conversion of a multi-argument function into a chain of single-argument functions. It describes the transformation process, not the invocation of the converted function. A good introduction to Financial Markets

Although I've been in the Financial Industry for many years, I've known that there are gaps in my knowledge, and this book helped to fill them.
I was looking for a step-by-step description of the Trading Process, and this book had what I was looking for (although I'll be waiting for the subsequent books in the set to provide more detail). I can now explain the difference between clearing and settlement.
I also liked the fact that it had clear definitions for terms such as 'Prime Broker' and 'Wholesalers' and had good diagrams that showed the relationship between the different components that make up the industry on both the buy and sell side.
I'd highly recommend this book as a good overview of the Financial Industry. My only minor complaint is that sometimes I felt that the diagrams tended to overwhelm the text.

Author Stephen Fried manages to get all the sleaze value plus a lot of surprises by choosing supermodel Gia Carangi as his topic. Although her face is widely recognized, Gia finished her modeling career in a blaze of heroin and disease just before the time when models became celebrities with name recognition. Her life is the perfect fodder for the exploitation market, but Fried goes beyond that with fluid prose and a reporter's nose for tracking down sources. His stories about her teenage years, with their mix of late nights in Philadelphia's gay clubs, manic worship, and glam-style imitation of David Bowie, as well as tales of Gia's ability to seduce her friends, male and female, are the product of a lot of work and make for very interesting reading. Gia's unabashed homosexuality and early death from AIDS make her story a palimpsest of life on the edge in the America of the 1980s.

One of the biggest "whatever happened to... ?" queries in the fashion world gets answered here, as Fried, a writer for Philadelphia magazine, details the rise (cover of Vogue ) and fall (death by AIDS) of Gia Carangi, a sultry young beauty who shot to prominence--and shot heroin--during the 1970s disco heyday. It's also a big "what if" story: if Gia had not died, Cindy Crawford (dubbed "baby Gia") may not have become the overexposed supermodedel she is today. Fried obviously means Gia's harrowing life to be partly a cautionary tale for all those young girls who wish to be models. However, Gia had many problems (broken home, drug use, confused sexuality) even before she stepped in front of a camera. Fried deridingly describes a 20/20 segment on modeling as "a report meant to detail 'the dark and anxious' side of the modeling business but manages somehow to make the whole enterprise seem extremely glamorous anyway," yet his saga, packed with juicy scoops about other models and photographers, has the same effect. In other words, this book will have a tremendous appeal to a general audience. For all public libraries.

Intrigued by the HBO movie "Gia"?

Surprisingly relevant to a large segment of people: women, mothers, and daughters, lesbians, sexually ambivalent women, people who have faced addiction, and those touched by AIDS.

After reading this well researched account of gorgeous supermodel Gia Carangi's very brief life, I'm still undecided if she was merely an over indulged pretty junkie or a tragic victim of her own beauty and dysfunctional family. Like most things though, the truth is far more complex and is probably somewhere in the middle. What is clearly apparent is that Gia's looks, and the ruthless profit driven world of fashion that uses and spits out beautiful girls in a macabre machine draped in gold lame and false promises, provided the catalyst that led to her demise.

From awkward pre-teen to AIDS victim at 26, Fried covers Gia's life through unflinching eyes and takes the reader on a heady journey: latch-key teen from a broken family, David Bowie fanatic, meteoric rise (at the impressionable age of 17 no less) to official globe trotting uber-hottie, drug experimentation that eventually led her to the seedy heroin shooting galleries of NYC's infamous Lower East Side, black-balled from the tight knit modeling world, relocating to the underbelly of Atlantic City in an unbelievably destructive relationship, then total rehabilitation only to be finally destroyed by AIDS in a time when AIDS was just being understood. Oh yes, it's a heady journey indeed and Fried deserves more than a nod for navigating the reader through it.

An insightful look into what it means to be more than merely pretty in America. Especially when the role of glamour girl is not especially welcome.

Ain't Enough Stars For This Book!

This book should be in every American home.
It is a brilliant telling of a tragic situation, in which a very beautiful young woman was placed, without the core values or life skills to negotiate it. What woman divorces her husband AND her children? What woman allows her 16 year-old daughter to move to New York City, unchaperoned? There is no excuse for the lack of parenting. The book is an excellent story of how fashion, i.e. advertising, works, and her stellar place within it. She was ill-equipped to utilize her status within the fashion community to create a beautiful life for herself. Her habit became an addiction. Her addiction became a disease. Her disease became a death sentence. It truly is a tragic story. but, still, there remains a sad, melancholy beauty that is still reflected in sensual. elegant images of this young Italian girl.
Her legacy will endure.

Gia comes alive in this book - vivid !

This book closes the door on the movie - with this book u know the true answers an the reality of Gia's life . She seemed to know how far she came which is good an her purpose is such an example for us all . I finished the book in 5 days - an I didn't want to but it's such a page turner . Gia was so alone in her life but she seemed very funny as well wish I can say more Stephen fried did a great job wish he would update more recent stuff on some of the people in the book . This is a go to book if u want to read the truth about her instead of the movie . No one was truly there for Gia . Mt daughter would not be in the rain sleeping on a mattress getting raped or at a bus station with full blown aids alone while I go check on my sones new baby arrival ? Thank u Stephen for the books honesty . When I say I wish I could say more its because I have a lot to say in reference to Gia's acquaintances an the people she should not have trusted . In the end Gia kept people in her life for all the wrong reasons because her family was not there for her . So she depended on her friends an loves for everything an that was used against her as well by these people . If your interested in the truth read this book Gia was noT just another pretty face at all . An her life was anything but perfect she was always alone even in the end she was alone .

Cambió mi perspectiva del hardcore gamer.

Muy buen libro. La forma en que pone en perfectiva el hecho de que los videojugadoras están mejor preparados para enfrentar "la vida" y las ventajas que esta forma de vida les da en lo laboral tiene mucha lógica.
Entre más lo leía, más orgulloso me sentía de pertenecer a la generación gamer.
Lo veo también muy útil para todas aquellas personas que trabajan o desean trabajar en la industria de los videojuegos pues muestra las tendencias de los mercados emergentes, es decir, prepara el terreno para aquellos que están trabajando en estudios de mercado referente a los videojuegos (con la finalidad de desarrollarlos).

Un lectura educativa e informativa desde el punto de vista de un gamer para describir las ventajas de ser un asiduo jugador de videojuegos. Simplemente la gente debería leerlo para cambiar el paradigma así como el estigma con el que a los videojugadores se les ha marcado. Altamente recomendado para el público en general y sobre todo, para la comunidad gamer que puede darse cuenta, que posee cualidades y aptitudes que serían una ventaja competitiva en un mundo donde las tecnologías de información son ya una realidad.

The Creativity Challenge - A Must Read

As an artist, I often find myself getting stuck; the creativity tends to flow less from time to time and this book is exactly what helps me dig deeper and find new ways to muster it up, sparking inspiration and new concept ideas for my next piece of art. I've been able to take some key challenges and apply it toward my artistry and overall day-to-day life without even thinking about it; while other days I flip to a random page and complete whatever challenge I land on. I highly recommend it for anyone who needs to be challenged to find their inner creativity, as it has most definitely helped me with mine.

MUST for educators of all ages!

What a great idea for a book! I always like to think of myself as innovative and creative, but the ideas in "The Creativity Challenge" take it to another level. I teach elementary school and cannot wait to use the different ideas in this book with my students this coming school year.

I plan on doing at least one challenge a week with my students. I really like how the different ideas are coded under five different idea types. Genius!

All people, regardless of age, should push the limits of their own creativity and as an individual, mother, and teacher this book provides a perfect springboard for just that!
