This book is a great text requirement for an MPH program. The only drawback I can think of, is that it is so darn heavy! An e-book or kindle version may not be as user friendly as one may think. Overall, good buy.

Amazing Book!

This was an incredibly good text book and I thoroughly enjoyed reading every bit of it. It is a compilation of topics as an overview of public health in American. The editors did a great job of choosing relevant topics that gave a student a good picture of Public Health and what makes up Public Heath. I highly recommend this book.

As mentioned by another person this book is really wordy for no real reason. I'm sure the same concepts could have been shared more effectively if plain language was used. Also it would have probably cut down the size of the book in half. I studied healthcare administration for my undergrad and now I am pursuing my MHA. Of all the books I've had to read in my healthcare career, this one by far has been the least interesting.

Pursuit Problems

Suppose you are given a problem which says: "Three dogs are placed at the vertices of an equilateral triangle; they run one after the other. What is the curve described by each of them?" How would you solve the problem? If this makes you scratch your head a little, don't worry. This problem actually appeared on the Cambridge University Mathematical Tripos Examination in 1871 and is one of the so-called "n-bug" problem. Obviously when n goes to infinity, the curve of each bug becomes a circle. On p. 110, Professor Nahin started to analyze this problem by writing down the radial and transverse components of the velocity, and step-by-step, he showed us how to solve this seemingly complicated problem, yet only elementary calculus (and perhaps some college physics) is needed. The approach is elegant. This book, which has a subtitle of The Mathematics of Pursuit and Evasion, obviously has a lot of mathematics and many equations, and it is not for general readers who are afraid of math. However, the book provides many elegant pursuit problems with military applications. For those who enjoy the real applications of calculus and perhaps like do some calculations on the back of an envelope, this is a superb book.

Excellent book, but lacking some intuitive interpretation.

This is an excellent review of the math of pursuit and escape paths. I have not read the book completely, but I concentrated my reading on a couple of problems I was mostly interested in: The Lady in the Lake problem, and the Lion-and-Man problem. These two problems are strictly connected, and have more immediate geometric explanations than the equations of the problems presented in the book. However, these alternative explanations are missing in the book; too bad because they add a lot to the understanding and intuition of the problems. In one case actually, (Lion-and-Man problem), I believe the outcome of the problem is different from the one provided. This doesn't detract from this enjoyable book, which is well written, with very approachable, step-by-step math passages.

A Fascinating Application of Mathematics

Pursuit theory has been a favorite mathematical recreation of mine since the early 1990's. In this book, the author explores many continuous and discrete pursuit/evasion situations with clarity and succinctness. I encourage anyone with a background in differential equations to work through the problems in this book. They are rewarding and may very well inspire new discoveries on the subject.

For the lay person, the problems are intriguing in their own right (e.g., "Pursuit of Invisible Targets") but the solutions are derived and expressed mathematically. At the very least, this book presents a truly fascinating application of mathematics to anyone who picks it up.

Excellent, concise and well-written book

I purchased Dr. Damij's book on TAD methodology and studied the TAD methodology, which is explained in detail by Dr. Damij in his book. As the Deputy Director of Purchasing Department in a big trading company, I used the TAD methodology to solve the problem of Sales-Claim. The TAD methodology not only enabled me to understand this complex problem but also helped me to suggest improvements, which considerably shortened the process of the Sales-Claim.
Dr. Damij's book is an excellent, concise and well-written book. I found the TAD methodology to be very simple and easy to use. This is an object-oriented methodology, which is highly useful for managers who want to improve the functioning of their company and for systems analysts who intend to develop a suitable information system. The first two phases of the methodology deals with the problem definition and identifying the functioning of the company. The third phase discusses as to how to perform the business process re-engineering. The last three phases focus on the development of the information system considered. The result of the fourth phase is the object model of the system. The fifth phase deals with designing the system and preparing it for implementation. The sixth phase implements the system developed in the previous phases.
I highly recommend this book for everyone who is seeking the possibility of making changes and improvements to the various functions of their company or department. This book is a must read for every systems analyst who perform information systems development.

This book is 3x more thorough than essential grammars (Like the version by Allan, Holmes and Lundskaer-Nielsen which I have reviewed as well.) So if you have a penchant for 700 pages of grammatic tutelage, this is the book for you. The "Routledge" is the best choice for translators, linguists and advanced Danish speakers available on Amazon right now. But remember, like English, colloquial Danish is ever "evolving" and simplifying itself, so if you just want to understand Danish Grammar for speaking purposes, just stick with an essentials type text.

Challenging, but it will make you a better historical linguist

As a graduate student of historical linguistics, I thought I had encountered every textbook and handbook of the subject around. I was surprised, however, to find this one. Anthony Fox's LINGUISTIC RECONSTRUCTION, published in 1996 in the series Oxford Textbooks in Linguistics, hasn't gained the popularity of other introductions like Lehmann's or Hock's, but that is a real shame as it is perhaps the most rigorous of them all.

Fox's textbook covers the usual ground of historical linguistics textbooks: the comparative method, internal reconstruction, language contacts, typology, and reconstruction of culture and society from lexicon. Examples are mainly drawn from the comparative study of the Indo-European languages, though Bantu and Austronesian material is also widely used. Like Lehmann in his Theoretical Bases of Indo-European Linguistics, Fox seems to believe that knowing the history of the field and its eminent personalities is just as important as knowing current vogues.

However, Fox's book is special because of the author's honesty about the limitations of each of the various methods of linguistic reconstruction. For example, he explains that the view of the proto-language reconstruction by the comparative method differs from that by internal reconstruction, the first producing large phoneme inventories and the second a simpler inventory. A reasonable reconstruction can only be achieved by a combination of methods. Furthermore, out of all the textbooks for historical linguistics that I know, Fox is the only one that strongly warns the student to ensure that his arguments are not circular. The criticism of glottochronology here is also considerably more devastating than elsewhere.

I would not, however, recommend the book for the complete newbie, as Fox's writing is extremely challenging. Better to enter the field with Campbell's excellent Historical Linguistics, 2nd Edition: An Introduction. Nonetheless, I strongly recommend this book to all who want to refine their skills. I certainly feel that I am a better student after reading Fox's LINGUISTIC RECONSTRUCTION.

Too wordy, no exercises, not enough examples to make you believe that the decried methods work.

On the other had the book is readable, and it might be that the other books on the subject are even worse.
