Robert Hirsch is an artist, author, curator, and educator.

Hirsch is the author of Seizing the Light: A History of Photography; Exploring Color Photography: From the Darkroom to the Digital Studio published by McGraw-Hill and Photographic Possibilities: The Expressive Use of Ideas, Materials, and Processes published by Focal Press.

He is a former associate editor for Photovision magazine and is a contributing writer for Afterimage, Digital Photography (UK), exposure, Ilford Photo Newsletter, and The Photo Review.

He was the Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Center for Exploratory and Perceptual Art (CEPA Gallery) in Buffalo, NY.

Hirsch is on the art faculty of SUNY Buffalo and teaches history of photography online through Eastern New Mexico University.

This is the One Great Book on the History of Photography!

Seizing the Light: A History of Photography. is a wonderfully broad, contemporary, eclectic and entertaining book. Robert Hirsch has produced the most useful, readable, and practical successor to Beaumont Newhall's classic, The History of Photography, first published in 1937. Seizing the Light is written in a friendly, accessible way -- dense with information, but more hip and lively than other offerings, especially those aimed at college students. Hirsch includes the "canon" of standard western photographic history (represented by Stieglitz, Weston, Adams, White, et. al.) first set forth by Newhall and other researchers, but updates the information with special emphasis on the last five decades of photographic practice, including digital imaging.

Many teachers and interested readers will greatly appreciate Hirsch's conscious effort throughout the book, to include numerous women and photographers from other cultures. (Chapter Two opens with an image of an American Indian, and includes a portrait of an African-American, affording students the realization that marginalized groups actually did appear as subjects before the camera in addition to working behind them.)

Students will also appreciate Hirsch's habit of opening new chapters with a description of cultural and political events occurring during the period under discussion: Chapter Twelve starts with a harrowing description of life for immigrants in New York City in the late Nineteenth Century during the time of Jacob Riis, and Chapter Seventeen has a helpful summary of the ending of the Vietnam War, connecting it smoothly to such diverse influences as Richard Nixon and the BeeGees! There are also wonderful endnotes following each chapter that are absolutely addictive, giving curious readers further information and surprising tidbits of information.

Hirsch's knowledge gained as a Director of CEPA Gallery in Buffalo (a contemporary non-profit Artist's space) provides him with exceptional insight into contemporary photography. This is especially evident in his last Chapter, Eighteen, "Thinking About Photography," which abounds with infrequently seen and challenging images by Arnulf Rainer, Nam June Paik, John Baldessari, Anselm Keifer, Gilbert and George, William Wegman and the Bechers. There is a clear and helpful section on Postmodernism, including the usual suspects: Cindy Sherman, Richard Prince, Barbara Kruger, Sherrie Levine, and Victor Burgin. There are sections on "Gender Issues" with Judith Golden, as well as one on "Fabrications" with Sandy Skoglund, Olivia Parker, Joel Peter Witkin and others. "Altering Time and Space" includes David Hockney, the Starn Twins, and the delicious hand-colored work of Holly Roberts. Other sections include "Investigating the Body" (Andres Serrrano, Robert Mapplethorpe, Nan Goldin, Sally Mann) and "Multiculturalism" (Clarissa Sligh, Carrie Mae Weems, Lorna Simpson, and the Guerilla Girls). Hirsch closes this bulging chapter with a discussion of digital imaging, including images by Pedro Meyer, Nancy Burson and several rising young artists in new media. He concludes with an extensive bibliography of related books and resources, a helpful list of monographs by the major artists presented throughout the text, and a section on sources for artists' books.

Robert Hirsch has produced a most impressive and useful book that readers will find engaging and relevant. The currency and eclectic nature of Hirsch's thought is fascinating and his book serves as a much-needed supplement to existing texts in the history of photography.

The Persistence of Fine Books

For everyone with an interest in photography, either as an artist of the medium, a beginner looking for direction, or a collector who wants informed background to enhance appreciation of fine photographs both from the past and from the present obsession, SEIZING THE LIGHT: A History of Photography is essential reading.

Robert Hirsch knows his subject and in one hefty book manages to share the beginnings of photography some 200 years ago with the evolution of the camera and the discipline of photographing. Well illustrated with both photographs and drawings, Hirsch chronicles the famous and not so famous practitioners of the art in succinct but richly colorful biographical abstracts to accompany examples of each artist. The phases through which this art form has passed makes for fascinating reading even beyond the scope of the title: the use of the camera in documenting the history of our globe at celebration, at war, at discovery, and at the side of the people of the day is a journey well lead by a writer well skilled.

Though this book is now six years old it remains one of the more important textbooks for the art school classroom. But more important it is so richly written that it remains a fascinating survey of life since the camera. From the beginnings of the pinhole box to the present day digital images on the cell phone etc, the invention of the camera has inextricably changed our perception of the world. Seizing the Photographic Light

Overall a great book on the history of photography. VERY comprehensive overview of the evolution of photography. It ties movements in art and social events into photography trends and developments. It also provides insight into how photographers and artists used the medium to express themselves and how experimentation lead to improvements over the years. My only negative comment would be that some of the earlly forms of cameras were not pictured. There were diagrams of early cameras, but after the first hundred years, there is little to no documentation on how they evolved cosmetically/ functionally. It'd be nice to see an example of the various "groundbreaking" cameras as they were discussed. Otherwise, a great book.

This is a story that will stay with you forever

I want to state that this review may contain spoilers. . . .

Many years ago, my 8th grade teacher gave out a copy of this story to everyone in class. It is really unlike anything I ever read. It's been nearly two decades since I've read this and I remember it clearly. It is profound and accurately describes a horrific flaw in human nature. It is also a story that I don't think people can truly grasp until adulthood.

After reading this story, my teacher had the class discuss what they would have done if they had been part of this society. Everyone in class stated that they would have left as they would have felt too guilty knowing that their happiness was a result of one person's suffering. Nobody seemed to realize that walking away did nothing to ease the suffering of the child.

Not one person mentioned that they would take the effort to change things. It's really not all that different in real life. Our world has so much suffering so a select few can live comfortable lives. We all turn our backs to it since we can't see it. We hear stories about blood diamonds, slavery, child labor, etc. What's even worse is that there are people who refuse to step forward when the suffering is right in front of them. People refuse to help our homeless, fail to report child abuse, blame victims, etc.

prosperity and happiness is the misery of one child

If you think this story is about people who do nothing in the face of suffering then I really think you've missed the point. The author states explicitly that the price of the city's peace, prosperity and happiness is the misery of one child. No change is possible without destroying the lives of everyone else. Don't take my word for it:

"If the child were brought up into the sunlight out of that vile place, if it were cleaned and fed and comforted, that would be a good thing indeed; but if it were done, in that day and hour all the prosperity and beauty and delight of Omelas would wither and be destroyed. Those are the terms. To exchange all the goodness and grace of every life in Omelas for that single, small improvement: to throw away the happiness of thousands for the chance of the happiness of one: that would be to let guilt within the walls indeed."

This is a much more subtle and troubling point: is the misery of one person justified if it buys peace, health and welfare for many people? And if there was no other choice, could you continue with your prosperous life knowing how it was bought? This seems a far more morally ambiguous and difficult inquiry to make of the reader than what you suggest.

It's not just a story about suffering

I found this story to be one of the most relevent stories on the modern human condition. I believe we are, to some extent the people in Omelas. Every time we drive by the homeless, every time we walk by the sick, every time we oooh and ahhh about something we see on television. But we still walk away. I think many people think that the people who walk away are the honorable ones in the story. I whole heartedly disagree. The one's who walk away are just as guilty as the ones who stay. They walked away and did nothing = the ones who stay and ejoy the "happiness."

Justin Bozonier is a data scientist living in Chicago. He is currently a Senior Data Scientist at GrubHub. Completely different approach to ML

This is a totally out-of-left-field book on machine learning. Not only is it novel, but I think the ideas will become more important over time, as more models move into production scenarios and need to be iteratively changed and improved, whilst not _breaking_ the model that already works.
The main idea, as you may have guessed, is to change the model development process from exploring data - followed by trying different models, to a more formal approach of wrapping your data in a test framework and then proceeding to develop the model(s).
The initial model (or failing test) can just be a random guesser, after this you continually re-factor your code to improve on the random result or previous iteration of the model (at which point the test passes).
This will seem weird to a statistician, who would insist of emphasizing significance tests or (at least) looking at an ROC curve, which this book also does. The point made by the author is that once you enter the real world of running prediction models in production, you need to move to a process of iterative development, where you have some formal guarantee that the new model is better than the last and that you have not somehow fooled yourself into using something that is not much better than random.
There are a couple of drawbacks to the whole approach though. The first is the pain of setting up the tests in the first place, especially when you have a lot of data. I thought about setting up some synthetic data to test a new model, but it was honestly quicker to step through an example with the real data to figure out whether the code was working or not.

This text is a primer for the economic analysis of medical markets and the production of health. It traces the economic rationale and development of the medical care organization. The first thirteen chapters use a "flow of funds" approach to describe the incentives and organizational structure of the health care system. Transactions between patients and physicians (and other) are examined to see how profits are made, costs covered, contracts written (or implied), and regulations formed. The continuing evolution of the system in the U.S. is the subject of two chapters on managed care. The last seven chapters take a wider macroeconomic perspective in order to explore the dynamics of change within the health care system, and to explicitly consider determinants of national health spending and the role of governments in public and private health.

The perfect introduction to health care economics.

I wrote a paper on managed care competition for an economics course. This book proved invaluable. Without any previous knowledge of health economics, I was able to read, learn, and understand a fairly complex subject in a short amount of time using this book. The text covers everything but remains at an undergrad level. The arguments and examples are simple, clear, interesting, and easy to remember. I definitely found this to be the best introduction and overview to health economics, after having read six or seven books on the subject.

It is well-reasoned, seeks to look at all perspectives objectively and avoids the trap of taking sides in the current healthcare debate. This book is just a bunch of thrown together essays with little context, and nothing to really guide your thoughts on the principals of ethics. As a student I really did not enjoy working from this book and felt that the arguments were not presented well in order to encourage though using different ethical principals.

After reading several pages of the book, I would say that this book is a treasure chest. You could learn and apply them to your [daily] life. The author provided real-life experiences and vivid examples of how one could continue to have a positive outlook. The author did a great job! I highly recommend this book. 5 starts.
