Nice try - but lacks depth

The very best parts of the book are the glossary and the appendices. The rest is a bunch of information put together in the most sloppy way I have ever seen. In the unlikely event that an editor actually did go through the book before publishing - he or she ought to be fired.

The text is, as far as I can see, a lot of print-outs from a spreadsheet, collected in overall categories and given a spiral back. Then sold at $150 !!!

The information is given in a list-format, with a keyword and the appropriate factors of relevance for a given section

For example: On page 8, section "chemical compounds", dynamite is listed, as an explosive, not a chemical warfare agent, and as a secondary explosive.

So far, so good - but the very same information is repeated in the next 13 lines in the very same table (?!?).

There are numerous examples of such duplicate information, which all in all becomes very tiresome.

The format is a good idea, sections with overall topics, "compounds" "pyrotechnics" and so on, and then a keyword based 'look it up' list of basic information.

So in the end two stars: One for the format, and one for the appendices.

She Wants Out

Lisa, Bright and Dark is a short book consisting of 143 pages in medium font. Lisa is beautiful, smart and owns an air of modesty and wisdom aswell as prestige compared to most of her friends and most of the kids her age (16). Her boyfriend is the most wanted boy at school and her friends are the most caring and perfect friends you could ever wish for. What more is there that she could desire?

Lisa desires her freedom.

Sometimes Lisa sits alone and starts to hear voices. She hears them inside her head and they are certainly not her own. Cheerful, optimistic Lisa fails to be the usual Lisa from time to time by dressing in black costume-her beauty subsides to this by shriveling up into a face that's much too pale and thin. Lisa sits through class in a cold daze and has to use all her energy and strength to answer a single question in class. She is drained of every possible hope to live. Lisa is starting to go crazy.
Being a smart girl she tells her parents but they 'ignore' her. Her teachers close their eyes and decide not to understand and Lisa falls continuously whilst also trying desperately to get the adults around her to notice her, getting her voice heard and running away from her illness. Luckily, Mary Nell Ficket (MN) who seems identified in the story as Lisa's closest friend decides to do something about the whole matter.
Along with her friend Betsy Goodman who has never met Lisa before and yet seems to be the only one Lisa feels safe enough to talk to and Elizabeth Frazer who seems to hug deeply a secret that makes her so strong and controlling with Lisa's craziness-the three of them show Lisa, it's her friends who'll make her better.
When you pick up the book in the beginning you have the impression that it is a book based on Lisa completely in a diary format. Well, that's what you get the impression of from other reviews anyway. But surprisingly enough, the more you read-the more you come to realise that Lisa isn't infact the main character much more than the rest of the characters are. Lisa creates a chain of situations and instead of Lisa, we become more attached to her friends who try and clean up the situations and help Lisa regain herself.
This book is easy to read for any age over 12 but it may seem a little intimidating. If you are giving it to a child you ought to be careful. It certainly isn't an average "Ask Alice" style book, it's much more dense if you look into it. Otherwise, it's a good book to read whilst you have a few minutes. I suggest you read it in a noisy atmosphere or a bright environment or you'll become a little drowsy at the end of the book and get a tiny bit 'down' yourself.

I read this book in grade school, and decided to read it again,does not disappoint. Sometimes, as parents we loose sight of what is in front of us. Great book!

Lisa is smart, pretty, popular and going insane. On "bright days" she's normal. On "dark days" she just sits there at her schooldesk and listens to the voices inside her head. Realizing that she is ill, she asks her parents to take her to a psychiatrist. They ignore the problem and say she's just going through a stage.
Lisa begins to act increasingly bizarrely. An episode of self-mutilation at school earns her a six-week vacation in Florida, but no actual help. By then her teachers have realized that something is seriously wrong, but their hands are tied. The only people who really try to help Lisa are her friends: Mary Nell, Betsy, and Elizabeth. Together they form a therapy group where Lisa sits and talks to them about what's going on. But it doesn't help. Lisa walks through a plate-glass window; her parents still don't pay attention. Only when she attempts suicide do they really wake up.
I found this book to be rather dated. It was written back in the sixties. The parents' reaction was unbelievable and the ending came too quickly and too fairy-taleishly. I'm not saying it was a terrible book, but I've read many that were much better.

Chapters are very well written and organized so that you can not only understand the frame of references but see how they can be applied in a clinical setting as well. I only wish they made a book like this geared for adult practice.

I was excited to learn Carla has another sewing book to add to my collection! I'm a big fan of her E-book patterns, and this is a great collection of all sorts of hat patterns from different designers. Having the patterns available in downloadable PDF format is a great addition to my sewing library, I can print off only the size I need and reprint if needed, no flimsy tissue patterns! And because each pattern has multiple descriptive photos with the instructions, each one is a mini sewing lesson.

Well, she's done it again! Carla always has the most fabulous patterns - from the incredibly detailed instructions to the downloadable and printable patterns, they are hands-down the best I've used!

Let me tell you what I love about the downloadable patterns: you can print them as many times as you want - in any and all sizes you want! If it's a pattern I know I'll use over and over again (and trust me - Carla's patterns are ones that you'll want to use again and again!) I will print it on cardstock for extra durability. SO MUCH better than flimsy tissue paper patterns where once you cut the one size you need, the other sizes are useless unless you want to trace each size separately. Yuck! Who has time for that?

I am thrilled with all the options and variations that this book has to offer! Endless possibilities for adorable hats!

Fantastic book!

You can find the patterns at this address! [...] I love this book! No, it isn't cluttered up with a wad of folded tissue paper pattern pieces for me to unfold and sort out. The PDF pattern format is by far my preferred method of sewing. I can print out only the pieces I need, when I need them. I never have to worry about losing pieces or tracing pieces or only being able to cut out one size. I find it much easier to print a few sheets of paper and tape them together. If I lose a pattern, I can print a new one. The author Carla Hegeman Crim has been my favorite designer for many years now. Her instructions are clear and thoughtful and so easy to understand. This book has so many options of fun hats to make. I look forward to years of hat making ahead of me!

This book was amazing like omg I couldn't put it down I just kept reading it flipping page after page I was sad when it ended but it is a must read book I could read this book over and over again and never get bored it's a must read a must buy a must keep on your book shelf and with you forever cause you'll wanna readbit again and again and won't put it down couldn't stop reading to eat or drink or even sleep and you will feel like that to once you start this book it sucks you into the world that Amy creates she can really suck you in keep writin girl This book needs like a million stars not just five

Disappointing

After all the five star reviews, I thought I had discovered a new romance/suspense writer. Not! I was very disappointed in this book and won't waste my money on the rest of the series. The story doesn't hang together and there are so many typos and grammatical errors in the book, it distracted me from the "story". The story itself was so unrealistic and poorly written I wondered if it was a high-schoolers first try. It did put me to sleep several times, so maybe it should be listed under sedatives!

This book was a suspenseful, dark romance that kept me enthralled to the very end! I couldn't stop reading! Amy Blankenship is a very creative writer who's books always have you guessing with each plot and storyline. The twists and turns her heroes and heroines experience are very captivating and keep you on the edge of your seat! Great story! I love all of her books! Check them out, you won't be disappointed!
