About the Author
Alan Moore has designed and created everything from books to businesses. He has a unique grasp on the forces that are reshaping our world and how to creatively respond to them. Working on six continents, Alan has shared his knowledge in the form of board and advisory positions at companies such as Hewlett Packard, Microsoft and The Coca Cola Company, workshops and speaking as well as teaching in institutions as wide ranging as MIT and Reading University’s Typography Department, Sloan School of Management and INSEAD. He is the author of four books on creativity, marketing and business transformation including 'No Straight Lines: making sense of our nonlinear world' (2011). He still works as an artist. He tries everyday to lead a life as beautifully as he possibly can.

Beautiful stories

It was ten years ago when a friend of mine said to me 'Beauty is everything'. This idea had never crossed my mind. I knew my friend liked beautiful things, well, ok, some do some don't. Beauty is 'everything' seemed a little bit overrated to me. But ever since this little sentence sticked and kept returning to me. And over the years I discovered that beauty isn't someones hobby, but a fundamental element of every aspect of life itself.
If you've never asked yourself the question why beauty might be 'everything', read Alan Moore's Do Design. The relevance of beauty reveals itself step by step and slowly. At first, it doesn't look like the book wants to convince you about anything. It's a storybook. You read the story of Mohammed Ali's (very short) poem, read about the origin of martial-arts form 'Aikido' and the story about how to keep a family farm in business. It's the diversity and abundance of the stories that builds to a point of understanding the role of beauty in life (personal- and business life).
If you don't want to connect the dots yourself, the book gives you a helping hand by presenting practices and maxims. Design is the way to deliver beauty to your business and your life. Part of the structure of the book - design as a mindset, a process and a craft - creates enough texture to Do Design, or start doing it.
It's a crazy world we live in. The relevance of Do Design won't be easily accepted by everyone. But more and more organisations are looking for purpose and relevance themselves. They will find a lot of inspiration in Alan Moore's book.

Optimistic Beauty

This is an optimistic book. A book that entreats all of us to simply live (and work) in a more beautiful way. And why not? The world would be a much better place if we only took on board a few of the ideas explored by Moore.
He inspires us through short stories told in an totally down-to-earth way, to see, to commit, to question, to adapt, to make jump changes, to share and belong, to better lead, to make your own place in the world more worthwhile. Practical without lecturing. I may not have agreed entirely with some of his examples (beauty is in the eye of the beholder, of course) but was constantly under lining phrases and catch-words that resonated with me as I read along -
"lean forward"
"beauty and utility"
"back yourself"
"commitment gives you freedom"
"keep the Utopian coast in your sights"
Oh, and the book itself is beautiful. A handy size and weight. Bite size nuggets of information beautifully laid out - clear fonts, page layouts, typesetting, images, pagination, etc. It's about the spaces between the lines, to paraphrase Moore.
Read it and you will not be disappointed.
