About the Author

Susan Anderson started Triumph Communications in 2005 upon realizing this Internet thing was here to stay and that there sure was a lot of horrid content already clogging it up. She started off as a solo writer, creating so much highly rated content for clients that she rose to the top spot on Guru.

That was enough to build some confidence and credibility, and she decided Triumph should serve more and better clients… and that she couldn’t do it alone. Switching to an agency model made bigger wins possible—for the clients and the writers. Of course, now the hitch was finding great writers to add to the team.

Seemed like the next logical step was to create a course to show others who love to write how to get paid for their words. Two birds, one stone! Her You Write, They Pay book and course has trained hundreds of freelance writers how to build businesses of their own… and some of those students have become part of the Triumph team in the process.

Even though she’s a bit of a hermit, she’s enjoyed presenting online and in-person training on freelance writing as part of Eben Pagan’s Traffic School and Ignition programs and Coffee Shop Millionaire. She was even flown to Fiji to teach there.

Susan splits her time between Huntsville, Alabama, and the Tri-Cities area of Eastern Tennessee. Mom to two teens and a small ark’s worth of animals, she counts walking on fire and breaking a wooden arrow with her throat as piece-of-cake accomplishments in comparison. If she’s not writing, she’s probably taking a long walk with the love of her life, trying to convince her chickens to weed the garden, or wiping drool off of her 1959 Volkswagen Beetle Ragtop, Miss Mabel (built by said love of her life).

Sweet simple introduction to the world of freelance writing
By Life Student
I came across Sue Anderson through the guest presentation she did through Eben Pagans Ignition course where he introduced her as the number one writer on the guru.com job board engine. Her presentation was dynamite and gave me a great glimpse into the world of freelance writing. But since the presentation was circa 2009 - I reached out to her to see if some of the figures she mentioned were still relevant. My own line of thinking was 'by now I bet the explosion of the internet (and its ease of connecting freelancers of all types with potential clients) has created a market saturation?' By pure coincidence she had just finished revising this book and was kind enough to point me in its direction.

For those who are brand new to the very idea of freelance writing, this book is aimed at you. It's promise is to help show you what the freelance writing industry is, what services it provides, 'what's possible' (aka - what can you expect to earn), and how to get started. It delivers on each of those items - in an extremely simplified way.

The writing style is simple, approachable, and highly conversational and will read a lot like an informational interview about what freelance writing is and what it . It's easy to see her expertise in article writing coming through in her book. She is also wonderful at answering the questions that anyone looking at the freelance writing field would be asking. (What does the freelancing market do? What types of things do freelancers write? Do I have to have marketing experience? What if I don't have a specialty? What if I don't have a background in a topic? Do I have to have a Pulitzer prize style of writing? Who hires freelancers? Where on earth do I start? What do I do?) I won't re-answer all of those here - but for those worried about the 'market saturation' bit like I was and the Pulitzer prize writing - the answer is a reassuring no. Thanks to the evolution of the blog and most folks needing simple engaging content - there will be a continuing need for simple relatable content for the foreseeable future.

Mrs Anderson goes through a very quick overview of 10 different types of content that individuals and businesses will hire you to help develop, mentions several job board listings you can go to either to begin building a business through bidding on projects for those who are not yet comfy with directly speaking to others about their business yet. At a minimum she recommends checking them out to get a 'live' view of the types of content businesses need help developing, seeing what other writers pricing and profiles look like to begin setting up your own. There is also a quick chapter on working for other agencies and going directly to businesses. The book ends with a Q&A chapter and mention of several resources for further study, information, and reference.

Overall, as a quick introduction for those brand new to the very concept of freelance writing - it is an excellent resource.

That said, I do feel the book has room for improvement/further development. When she mentioned checking other peoples profiles on the job boards, I was left wondering 'How can you tell which profiles are good ones vs crummy?' This same question came up when she also mentioned comparing others pricing to begin setting your own…If you are brand new - would you know what to look for to differentiate bottom tier from mid and upper in finding the quality (highly sought) freelancers? There were also a few times where I felt the book could have used some further development. Most notably this came when she mentioned developing a flow chart to anticipate all the steps in a project from bid to completion. As an introduction and overview of freelancing already, I didn't see why I should be told to go figure the basic flow of a project from bid to completion out on my own. Being new I can say that I don't even know what I don't know - and have a feeling it would be easy to miss something and learn the hard way in a case where 'book smarts' would be just as good as 'street smarts' (and save that for a better time)

All said - I would give this 4 of 5 stars for achieving the goal it set out for. It is a great first peak into the world of freelancing and for a general 'start here' guidebook. It also help me come up with a few great ideas for who to directly market to and got me excited for the possibility just like she said it would. But there was a tad bit missing for me to give it a full 5 star rating as a guide to beginning the process of freelancing. I am betting we may see those come up in a future draft since the author is now on her 3rd edition. (I haven't read the previous 2 - but can only assume a commitment to quality for her readers since she has revised twice already)

Recommended for new and experienced writers
By Dennis
In You Write, They Pay, Susan Anderson lays out a solid path for new writers to take on their way to becoming successful freelance business writers. She provides a number of types of writing you can do, as well as where and how to find new clients. As a 16 yr veteran, I was surprised to find plenty of new advice, and it works! I put one of her points to test, and wound up landing a new client right away. This is an excellent read for beginners or for people with established freelance businesses who may need to update their policies.
