Not great, but not bad

Ed is the creator of the Realms, and I will forever be grateful to him for it, but his writing is sub par at times. His books start out strong, but end on a weak note. In this novel, there is a good amount of mystery, which I enjoyed. I may not read mystery novels, but I do like a good mystery. However, while there was plenty of intrigue, I felt it could have been delivered better, and we were given info a lot of information about what was going on through dialogue, rather than getting to read about it and experience it ourselves. The ending felt anti-climatic, as Greenwood books often seem to.

While I love a good laugh, and appreciate the humor, there was almost too much of it here, especially since every character has the same wry sense of humor, to the point where none of their jokes are really unique.

That said, it was a decent read over all, and at this point, I am so hungry for Realms novels, I'll read any one that is released. Bring back your authors, WotC! There is a tidbit about Eilistraee's whereabouts, too, which was a nice treat, though it leaves one wondering exactly what the passage meant...

The mightiest mage of the Forgotten Realms forges peace between masters of magic.

This book feels like a "side trek" adventure for a very "high level" adventuring campaign. There is an homage to THE COLOR OF MAGIC, in the premise of a "Lost Spell", which is coveted by all the arch ages of the realm. Elminster must arbitrate an accord between these mages in order to determine which of them could wield this spell, which would allow one of them to dominate the world through magic. What we wind up with is a haunted house filled with mages in the middle of a "spellstorm" which chaotically disrupts all magic within. It has charming moments as arrogant wizards are rendered helpless, with a dash of whodunit. Some plot threads are left hanging and the resolution is a bit easy for Elminster compared to his recent rebirth and madnesses, yet this is forgivable as perhaps not every adventure must be part of a grand saga.

A bit of a letdown...

I've enjoyed what I've read by Ed Greenwood in the past, and I do love the Forgotten Realms universe, so I was expecting to really enjoy this one too. Unfortunately that turned out to not be the case. Unlike the epic Forgotten Realms stories I'm used to, this read much more like a confusing murder mystery that lacks a clear purpose. The pacing on this is quite slow and the lack of an engaging story made it difficult for me to push through.

I'm willing to chalk this up to a story that just didn't work for me, in hopes that the next title will be more interesting, engaging, and clear.

Decent introduction to CRRT

This is a great introductory text about CRRT. It is appropriate for nephrology fellows, nephrologists, intensivists who perform CRRT or want to learn about the basics behind it, as well as for ICU or nephrology nurses.

Pros:
This is really the only CRRT textbook out there, at least that I'm aware of (not counting the $100 Dialysis books).
It is a very practical handbook.
It has a lot of pictures and diagrams, which I have used when teaching residents about CRRT. It explains the different modalities of CRRT very well (CVVH, CVVHD, CVVHDF, SLED, SCUF etc).
It has a chapter about how to start a CRRT program that might be very helpful to physicians wanting to do that.
It has chapters about citrate versus heparin anticoagulation, and troubleshooting the CRRT machine (e.g. what does an elevated arterial/venous/TMP pressure mean etc).

Cons:
The book gets very repetitive; since different authors wrote the chapters, the same information is provided multiple times.
The book is overpriced for what you get, but comparable in price to other medical textbooks.
It has no significant discussion of the important clinical studies in renal replacement therapy in the ICU. I expected a more detailed discussion about timing of initiation, dose of CRRT etc.
More information about drug dosing in CRRT would also improve this book, but then there are not a lot of data out there about this.

Would I buy it again? Yes, definitely.

Concise and well-written

This is a concise yet detailed review of CRRT. It has a nice historical introduction that I found very interesting. Of course the selling point of this book is the very solid physiology overview that precedes the treatment-specific chapters. In other words, this isn't just a how-to-CRRT book, it's an evidence based collection of studies and guidelines/recommendations.. I highly recommend this book which I just finished (and spilled coffee on page 42!)to nephrology fellows and staff. It is probably to detailed for medical students and residents unless they're specifically interested in nephrology!

I think this book is describing the CRRT modalities and the way to implement them.
It describes the dialysis prescribtions, complications, timings, indications and all pertaining information.

It also gives a hint about the Antibiotic dosing adjustment during CRRT.
Its a good one.

No parent has time to do everything (and nor would it be good for our kids if we did). That’s even truer if you have more than one child, or a demanding job, or are on your own. So how do you decide what you absolutely must do and what you can let go? Unless you want to live in a permanent state of guilt, angst, or trepidation, spending some time thinking about what things will make the biggest difference to your child and what you can afford to let ride really makes sense.

Let’s think about what you’re aiming for. You want your kids to enjoy their childhoods, and you want them to grow into healthy, confident, successful adults who will be happy and will make those around them happy, too. Recognizing that goal starts to focus your mind—but how do you narrow it down further to the “must do” priorities? How do you know what’s really, really important?

I’ve spent many years watching lots of children grow up, with great fascination. Not to mention my own—I have three children, and three stepchildren whose lives I became involved with in their early teens. This deep fascination with what parents do and the effect these actions have on their children has also led me to ask many adults about their own childhoods. When I pulled all this information together, the picture that emerged clearly indicated that parental input makes the most difference.

I’ve narrowed down the real essentials to 10 broad principles. These are the things that you need to get right in order to set your children up for the best possible life. You can get them right in your own way, of course—we’re all different. Occasionally, I should warn you, you’ll get them wrong. We all do that. You’ll realize you got it wrong and you’ll make amends, so that will be okay, too. After all, your children don’t need perfect parents (how excruciating would that be?).

Your children need parents who put them first. I’m guessing that you put your children above yourself in your priority list. That’s good; that’s one similarity I’ve noticed among all the best parents I know.

There’s a lot of very important stuff in this book that will make a big difference to your children—but don’t panic. I bet you’re doing a lot of it already, and the fact that you’re reading this book shows you take your job as a parent seriously, which is a big plus. Assuming you’re human, however, there are bound to be some important things that you haven’t thought through.

We tend to have certain principles we feel are important (often having to do with what influenced our own childhoods) and others that we don’t really think about. This book can help you spot the gaps so that you can give attention to the most important things you could be doing for your children.

Doing some of these things may be hard work; some of them will come naturally. Irritatingly, some of the pieces you find difficult will come naturally to your partner, but that works both ways. On the plus side, however, working on the difficult pieces will help you realize just how much of what you do for your children isn’t so important. Best of all, after you have these 10 bases covered, you can stop stressing about the rest, and get on with being a great parent and enjoying your child.

Excellent book and well worth the money

I recently started watching her tv show on BBC America and I am hooked! Everything she says makes perfect sense to me, although I am a health food freak. The cookbook itself contains very easy to follow recipes and most are quite tasty. I am not a good cook to begin with, but can easily follow these recipes. The book also gives nutritional information on the foods and explains why you should eat certain foods to help certain health conditions improve. I don't care if she is a doctor or a lawyer or a sheep herder, this is a great cookbook if you want to lose weight the healthy way, not through dieting but through proper nutrition. Excellent, and one of the few cookbooks I didn't receive and turn around to sell on ebay after realizing they are too complicated!

Best diet ever. She is one fireball of a lady. Love her show too

I got hooked on her show on BBC America, my sister bought me the cookbook a few months, and I've been on this diet or should I say life style change, for the past 2 weeks. My husband has dropped 20 lbs. and I've dropped 9, and we love the food. It's great to eat so healthy. Mind you I've always been a big veggie eater anyways, but in all my 46 years I've never cooked with fennel or leeks and now I can't live without it. She's right, my energy level is higher, my PMS is 75% improved and we are full. Buying organic is not that bad either, food tastes better and with not eating out or eating tons of meat, it is cheaper. We will keep on this lifestyle change and stick with it. Thanks Gillian. Now bring out another cookbook.... I had to order this book for my boss who know wants one as well, as he is jealous of my great healthy lunches. I love aduki beans.....I used to eat Lean Cusines, Weight Watchers etc, but Gillian is right, they have so much sodium. I'm not a fan of salt nor have I ever been, but my hands and ankles love me without the salt from these prepackaged foods. I'm hooked for life. A fan and skinner in Florida.

Great Recipes & Great Holistic Nutrition Education

I've watched Gillian McKeith's show a few times back when BBC America was still part of my basic cable package (thanks a lot Charter Communications for removing it! :( ) So I knew I would like this book. However I really need to take the time to go through more of these recipes and finish the book. She makes eating vegan/whole-food-plants-based seem so simple and easy! And she covers herbs and supplements and herbal teas and what they do for the body. Such as just off the top of my head - don't have the book in front of me now - Dandelion Tea helps to clean and detoxify your liver... stuff like that. Love it!

Jean Hunnisett has a lifetime's experience of professional costume making, including work for the Old Vic, Sadlers Wells, Royal Opera and Ballet, Royal Opera House-Covent Garden, the English National Opera, Washington Ballet, Houston Opera, Zurich Ballet, Australian Ballet and as Principle Cutter for Glyndebourne Festival Opera. She has worked for BBC Television on over fifty shows: 'The Six Wives of Henry VIII', 'Elizabeth R', 'Emma', 'Pride and Prejudice', 'Ivanhoe', 'Vanity Fare', 'Dr. Who', nine productions of the BBC Shakespeare Series, nine of the BBC Operas, etc. Jean also worked for commercial television companies, on shows such as: 'Edward the VII', 'Ghosts', 'Pygmalion' for Annette Crosby, and Twiggy among others. Her film credits include: 'The Slipper and the Rose', 'Joseph Andrews', 'The Corn is Green', 'For Your Eyes Only' and many more. For productions in London's West End theatre, she has made costume for such artists as Joan Collins, Dame Wendy Hiller, Joan Plowright and Dorothy Tutin. Not as solid as its predecessor...

This volume of Period Costume for Stage and Screen covers the Victorian and Edwardian eras, and the book is much less useful than the one that came out before it. While there are still a variety of patterns there is not nearly as much guidance on how to put them together, correct fabrics and looks, and similar detail. I have, however, used it in conjunction with my copy of Patterns of Fashion to iron out some of the more difficult concepts in that second book. Over all I still recommend it for a completionist's library, but would not recommend it to the beginning sewer at all.

Although I am not using this book for stage nor screen, but for a series of dolls clothed in 19th century fashion, it is an invaluable source of information on dress style, design and basic pattern construction for the garments I am making. A good basic understanding of garment construction and dress making would be helpful - this book is not for the beginner dress maker. The book is well laid-out, clear and precise. I own numerous books on fashion of the period, including antique fashion books and this one pulls it all together. Excellent!

Jean Hunnisett's books are my favorite! She has so much knowledge to share that you just can't find anywhere else, I wrote an extensive review on her other book, 1600-1800, which I used extensively. I have yet to actually use this book, but have read through it and I have a few projects planned. Highly recommended!
